ABOUT ALABAMA INDUSTRIES FOR THE BLIND

The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), which is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Blind, Deaf, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families.

Founded in 1932, AIB is the state’s largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. Mattie Smith’s passion was to provide remunerative employment for women who were blind. Starting AIB meagerly with five donated sewing machines and five seamstresses who would sew items for homemakers, AIB produced many products for the US Government, State and commercial customers, including a contract to produce long neckties for each service branch. AIB has 315 employees that includes the manufacturing facility in Talladega, Alabama, and Birmingham, Alabama, along with the operations of five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base, and Moody Air Force Base.

Partnerships help us reach farther and influence more people. Through long-standing partnerships with organizations such as National Industries for the Blind and the AbilityOne Program, we connect people who are blind or visually impaired with government service contracts nationwide, providing companies with skilled workers and advancing opportunities for visually impaired individuals. The AbilityOne Program, authorized by the Javits-Wagner O’Day Act and administered by the U.S. AbilityOne Commission, is an employment program for people who are blind or have other significant disabilities. Partnerships also make possible the production of more than 3,000 SKILCRAFT products, including cleaning & janitorial, mattress & bedding, medical supplies & equipment, office products & equipment, paints & tools, and writing instruments.
