ABOUT SPECIAL PROJECTS
AIDB’s Special Projects Department is AIDB’s collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with deferral partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders. Special Projects consist of Special Education Coordination, The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Regional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Center at AIDB, The Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT), The Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project (REAL), Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC), the Agriculture Education Program, and Short-Term Programs. In addition, Special Projects is expanding services within the new AIDB North Campus in Decatur, Alabama. Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission. Specifically, Short-Term Programs are responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama from public school, private school, or homeschool. Students in grades 6th-12th will attend three, four, or five day group or individual courses throughout the school year that focus on the Expanded Core Curriculum. Students attend in-person short courses at AIDB’s North Campus in Decatur, Alabama as well as virtual courses to gain specific knowledge and skills while remaining enrolled in their local school district.

The right candidate for this position will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all Short-Term Program students receive a world-class experience that arms them with an abundance of knowledge and skills. You will play a vital role in the lives of visually impaired students by teaching them to become independent in a sighted world. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity. This role also requires physical ability and stamina, such as frequent standing, walking, recreational activity, and lifting. You will become a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum high school diploma or General Education Diploma.
· Minimum one (1) year of work experience in an educational and/or residential setting.
· Must be Servsafe certified OR become within 3 months of employment
· Must possess excellent written and oral communication, basic office skills: completing forms, maintaining inventory, providing documentation and filing.
· Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Products and Google Suites.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven work experience with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL school bus).
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment.
- Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of hire.
- A minimum sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL must be obtained in the first twelve (12 months) and SURVIVAL PLUS in the first twenty-four (24) months.
- May be required to possess a valid Alabama Drivers License and may be required to obtain a CDL and Alabama School Bus Driver Licenses within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must maintain yearly certification for Alabama school Bus Driver License (if applicable) and valid Alabama Driver License.
- Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid, Medication and Behavior Management training within 12 months of employment.
- Must complete a Foundation of Visual Impairment e-Learning course within the first twelve (12) months.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to include some weekends.
- Implement Independent Living goals as written by STP teacher.

SALARY: $15.37- $22.21 HP 40 (High School Diploma/GED)
