Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 32,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.
ABOUT THE ROLE
AIDB Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with federal partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders.
Special Projects consist of Gallaudet University Regional Center- South, Special Education Coordination, The NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB, The APH Center for Assistive Technology Training, The Gallaudet University Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project, development of the AIDB North facility, and the Joe Tom Armbrester Agricultural Education Program. Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission.
There are four projects:
- Regional Early Acquisition of Language (REAL).
- NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB (NRSC).
- Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT).
- Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC) – South.
- REAL – Provide support in the coordination and delivery of service related to training and other activities designed to support language acquisition for deaf/hard of hearing children from identification through age 4, their families and the professionals who support them.
- NTID – Provide supervision and support during summer camps and other large events during the school year.
- CATT – Provide support for training activities and work collaboratively to design and implement training opportunities and technical assistance.
- GURC – Provide support for regional and national initiatives related to the Gallaudet University Regional Center training and community support.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and clients served nationwide through partnerships at AIDB. As the leader of AIDB Special Projects, you will serve as a member of the Institute’s leadership team and gain hands-on leadership experience. You will report to the Chief Education Programs Officer. Your leadership style should always be aligned with our mission, purpose and core values as well as possess a genuine love and concern for the success of the teachers and students served throughout our nation.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
· Masters in Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Special Education, Psychology, Vocational Rehabilitation, Educational Administration, or related field.
· Professional experience with federal and state funding, statutes and/or laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they affect those with exceptionalities.
· Minimum five (5) years of successful experience in senior educational administration or related field administration.
· A sign language proficiency on the AIDB SCPI scale, or similar score on acceptable comparable sign language proficiency instrument.
· Must be able to provide a valid driver license and proof of insurance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience in raising state and federal funds.
· Experience with programs serving individuals who are Deaf and Blind.
· Experience working with professionals on national platforms.
· Experience in coordinating budget amounts in excess of $10 Million
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
AIDB North Responsibilities:
- Be the point of contact for all AIDB-N
- Provide leadership and direction for all AIDB-N programs
- Oversee all daily operations at AIDB-N
- Oversee all departments at AIDB-N in collaboration with any supervisors of personnel and programs located in Talladega.
- Provide visionary leadership in existing programs and strategic planning to enhance and expand the AIDB-N campus.
- Assist with developing, implementing and providing oversight for Special and Regional projects located at AIDB-N
- Develop and Maintain rapport and a shared vision of the future with staff members and partner with personnel, parents, students, alumni and administration.
- Provide knowledge and direction of independent living skill techniques and knowledge of contemporary issues and trends in curricula for students who have multiple needs and sensory impairment(s).
- Must communicate frequently with the CEPO, keeping them informed of any issues and concerns with the day-to-day operations of AIDB-N.
- Lead all public events held at AIDB-N and serve as a spokesperson when necessary.
Special Projects Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and direction for AIDB Special Projects. The Executive Director will have supervisory responsibility over all AIDB Special Projects partnerships including, but not limited to, National Technical Institute for the Deaf, American Printing House, and Gallaudet University.
- Continue fulfilling AIDB’s vision for expanding our partnerships nationwide.
- Provide visionary leadership in existing programs and strategic planning to enhance and expand Special Projects regionally and nationwide.
- Must be able to work flexible schedules including nights, and weekends, to support all components of AIDB Special Projects.
- Must possess knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they affect students with special needs.
- Assist with developing, implementing and providing oversight for special and regional projects located at the AIDB North Campus location in Decatur, Alabama and in Talladega, Alabama.
- Must be able to develop and maintain rapport and a shared vision of the future with funding partners, parents, students, alumni, AIDB administration, and stakeholders.
- Make recommendations to the Chief Education Programs Officer for policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal laws.
- Collect student/consumer and program data that will be used to evaluate program success, student outcomes, and the progress made toward the implementation of strategic planning goals and objectives.
- Assist the Chief Education Programs Officer and Departmental Administrators in the development and management of budgets for all federal and state programs in Special Projects.
- Must demonstrate excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to prove knowledge of independent living skill techniques and knowledge of contemporary issues and trends in curricula for students who have multiple needs and sensory impairments.
- Must possess excellent communication skills to include in writing and presenting in public venues.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY:100,00.00 - $145,000.00 Scale A1 Rank O2
Annual salary based on hours scheduled to work each academic school year.
(260 Days) Direct deposit is required.
