ABOUT ALABAMA INDUSTRIES FOR THE BLIND
The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), which is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled and their families.
Founded in 1929, AIB is the state’s largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. Mattie Smith’s passion was to provide remunerative employment for women who were blind. Starting AIB meagerly with five donated sewing machines and five seamstresses, which would sew items for homemakers, AIB, experienced many products for the US Government, State and commercial customers including a contract to produce long neckties for each service branch. AIB has 315 employees manufacturing facility in Talladega, AL and facility in Birmingham, AL. AIB also operates five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Warehouse Clerk role will be responsible for the operation of our Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) Warehouse at the AIB Store. This position reports to the Store Manager – AIB Store.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate
- Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License. A reasonable accommodation will be considered for an applicant that is visually impaired or blind.
- Must be able to be insured by AIDB insurance carrier by maintaining a good driving record unless a reasonable accommodation is considered.
- Must possess a good driving record with no record of DUI unless a reasonable accommodation is considered. Driving record will be checked for the previous five years.
- Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and Sheets).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum one (1) year of work experience in a retail store environment.
- Minimum one (1) year shipping and/or receiving work experience in a warehouse.
- Minimum one (1) year experience operating material handling equipment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
- Must understand, support and follow the mission of the AbilityOne Program by remaining in compliance of statutory and regulatory requirements set forth in the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act. You are expected to conduct all business ethically and lawfully.
- Attend conferences, in-service training and other functions as directed by supervisor.
- You may be may be required to assist the Delivery Driver in making deliveries to the customers.
- Must be able to perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for others to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills.
- Must be able to deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB Team to include co-workers, the leadership team, Store Manager, Sales & Marketing Manager and Executive Director by telephone, written correspondence and in person by using good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in the work assignments.
- Must be available to work the regular work schedule and may be required to work overtime.
- Must possess general knowledge of office equipment and machines including electronic cash register.
- Must be physically capable of lifting, moving, carrying, and handling numerous boxes weighing up to 60 pounds on a regular basis.
- Operate material handling equipment to include a forklift and pallet jacks and be responsible for unloading freight carriers and placing merchandise into proper storage areas.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Physical control of all inventory, material and supplies of the warehouse for external shipping and receiving and internal movement of goods.
- Maintain the warehouse area to be organized and clean.
- As merchandise is received load or unload, inspect items, and reconcile shipping documents with purchasing records. Maintain all required documentation with data entry of all inventory and warehouse materials.
- Resolve shipping discrepancies by collaboratively working with AIB Store personnel, accounts payable clerk, and vendor.
- Maintain hazardous material records in compliance with AIDB requirements along with federal and state regulations.
- Assemble, sore repackage and generally prepare merchandise for placement onto the shelves in the AIB Retail Store or the warehouse area.
- Assist the Store Clerk with inventory placed or restock items in the AIB Retail Store by placing on displays or shelves.
- Assist the Store Clerk with pricing by changing the price tags on merchandise based on the price list.
- Assist the Store Clerk with setting up advertising signs and displays with merchandise to attract and promote sales.
- Assist the Store Clerk with by packing customer purchases and assist with loading into the customer vehicle as required.
- Generate and apply bar coding labels.
- Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
- Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class within the first six (6) months of employment.
SALARY: $12.92 - $15.28 Scale C5 Rank 26
Payroll Schedule – Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required
