LOCK OUT/TAG OUT COORDINATOR
1.0 SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Tag Out Coordinator ensures proper implementation of the lockout/tagout (LOTO) process to safeguard personnel and equipment during maintenance and repair activities. This role includes managing all aspects of the LOTO program, coordinating with project teams, and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. The position reports directly to the Senior Ship Superintendent.
Essential Job Duties
- Oversee and administer the lockout/tagout program for all maintenance, repair, and operational activities.
- Develop, issue, and track lockout/tagout permits to ensure accurate and timely documentation.
- Collaborate with crafts and subcontractors to implement LOTO procedures during work on equipment, piping, tanks, or systems.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of LOTO procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA and company policies.
- Maintain a detailed record of all active lockouts/tagouts, ensuring accurate identification and control of energy sources.
- Train personnel in proper lockout/tagout procedures and safety practices.
- Investigate and resolve any deviations, errors, or unsafe practices related to lockout/tagout activities.
- Support incident investigations and provide recommendations for corrective actions regarding LOTO safety.
- Ensure all tools and equipment used for lockout/tagout are maintained and in good condition.
- Prepare and submit reports related to lockout/tagout activities, audits, and incidents.
- Exercise the authority to stop unsafe work and ensure protection from undue consequences when doing so.
Requirements
2.0 EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and OSHA regulations.
- 2 years of experience in a shipyard, industrial, or manufacturing environment.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Lockout/Tagout Safety.
- Experience with energy control programs in ship repair or heavy industrial environments.
3.0 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the following:
- In-depth understanding of lockout/tagout processes and regulatory requirements.
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to identify potential hazards.
- Ability to identify and control hazardous energy sources across multiple systems.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills to manage LOTO permits and logs.
- Effective communication skills to instruct and train personnel on LOTO procedures.
- Problem-solving skills and initiative to address and resolve LOTO-related challenges.
- Familiarity with safety standards such as OSHA, ANSI, and NFPA.
4.0 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and navigate on steel decks, docks, and uneven surfaces for up to 8 hours per shift.
- Frequent climbing of ladders, stairs, and vessel access points, including confined spaces, and elevated work areas.
- Capable of lifting and carrying materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Adequate vision and hearing to identify safety hazards and communicate effectively in noisy environments.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and heavy equipment operations.
- Requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and respirators.
- Extended working hours, including weekends, depending on project schedules.
- Frequent collaboration with multiple trades and subcontractors in a high-paced, dynamic environment.
