What are the responsibilities and job description for the MUSEUM OPERATIONS MANAGER position at Alabama Space?
Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Museum Operations
- Ensure all employees are properly trained and all areas are staffed at the approved staffing levels to ensure excellent customer service
- Oversee the Museum Operations budget including labor, supplies, and program materials
- Complete regular museum walkthroughs to ensure all staff are engaging with customers and ensure the Museum Operations department is staffed appropriately for maximum guest experience
- Formally and regularly communicate to staff, all relevant and appropriate operational and corporate information.
- Ensure that exhibits are always functional and operational and provide appropriate communication to necessary departments to repair exhibits for guest enjoyment
- Training and Educational Activities
- Assist the Education Department in the development of new workshops, demonstrations, and labs as needed.
- Work alongside Museum Education to assist with the development, operation, and enhancement of Specialty programs like Daily Field Trips, etc.
- Work alongside Museum Education to create and implement historical training on all exhibits, accurate training for tours, and any other related programming.
- Work with appropriate cross-functional team to train and execute NASA bus tour
- Simulators
- Lead training for all staff to ensure each employee is competent and able to safely run simulators
- Ensure that safety standards are understood, enforced and followed by all staff
- Work closely with Museum Technician staff to understand simulator issues and closures.
- Organization and Staffing
- Ensure the accurate and timely completion of payroll documentation for appropriate departmental staff.
- Formally and regularly communicate to staff, all relevant and appropriate operational and corporate information.
- Ensure that safety standards are understood, enforced and followed by all staff.
- Meet or exceed the expectations of the Senior Director of Museum Operations and the VP of Human Resources for employee selection, hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline.
- Meet or exceed the expectations of the Senior Director of Museum Operations for the development of departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure that staff is instructed and informed of Center and departmental policies and procedures and follows set policies and procedures.
- Meet or exceed the expectations of the Senior Director of Museum Operations for the accurate and timely completion of related tasks and assignments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position has direct responsibility for the Museum Operation Supervisor and Museum Guides
- Instructs, coaches and encourages staff to support by action and example the Mission and Vision of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center
Job Specification
Required Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years closely related work experience in a similar guest relations environment with 2 years at the managerial/supervisory level OR an equivalent combination of experience and education in a similar environment
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with individuals inside and outside of the organization
- Must have excellent and proven leadership skills; must have developed and conducted training programs; must be highly motivated and an outstanding role model and motivator.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- BS Degree in Business, Communication, Marketing-PR, Education, or closely related field required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands Summary:
This position has the following special requirements:
- Walking, climbing (stairs) to/from other buildings to access other departments and to oversee, observe and interact with guests and employees.
- Standing to address guest issues or assist staff in assigned areas.
- Sitting for long periods of time (4-6 hrs).
- Carrying, lifting items and supplies up to 20 lbs. shoulder high.
- Bending, kneeling, reaching to operate simulators and retrieve supplies.
- Sight, reading, wrist movements, feeling to operate computer terminal, cash register, etc.
- Talking, hearing to instruct employees and assist guests in person and over the telephone.
This position involves working in both a climate-controlled office environment and outside where exposed to various weather conditions and changing temperatures. This position deals extensively with the public and employees throughout the organization. This position requires constant communication and instruction of reservation agents in the operation of the reservation system.
