PART-TIME LIFEGUARD
Overview
The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of all in-water activities for Space Camp, Space Academy, Advanced Academy, Robotics Space Camp, Aviation Challenge, and all additional programs that participate in lake activities; perform daily tasks required for the upkeep and maintenance of the lake facility and related equipment; and ensure that all lifesaving equipment is present and operational for all water activities. Lifeguards will be required to pass both a written and skills test demonstrating the physical and technical skills necessary to carry out emergency procedures before being hired.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Prevent accidents and injuries through knowledge of lifeguarding and water safety skills.
- Lifeguards must be able to respond to emergencies using visual and audio surveillance.
- Lifeguards must be able to stand for long periods and allow nothing to distract them from continual concentration and attention to duties.
- Lifeguards must be able to identify emergencies both visually and audibly, and then respond appropriately.
- Respond accordingly to emergencies in which assistance or first aid is required within the scope of certified training and Rocket Center policies and procedures.
- Report and record accurate information as required concerning accidents, incidents, discipline, attendance, maintenance, and time on duty.
- Have reliable transportation to and from work.
- Survey the swimming facility and check staff information in the office.
- While on duty, the lifeguard must be in established uniform.
- Be responsible for the general condition of the facility.
- Keep all clutter picked up and lifesaving/first aid equipment in readiness condition.
- Submit a verbal or written report on any condition which warrants the attention of the Water Training Facilities Manager.
- Promptly enforce all Rocket Center pool rules and policies that apply to all situations courteously and tactfully.
- Utilize discipline procedures that are reasonable and appropriate as stated in the procedure manual.
- Reflect a positive image of the Rocket Center to the swimmers.
- Actively participate in in-service training and staff meetings.
- Keep all job-related certifications current for employment.
- Perform light to moderate maintenance concerning the pool and surrounding areas when needed.
- These duties will be performed when there is another guard on duty to monitor the pool, as user numbers allow, or when there is no one in the pool.
- Accept and perform all other responsibilities necessary for the good of the organization.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience: (Please note we will train successful candidates).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to pass the American Red Cross CPR and Lifeguard certification course within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- 1 year of formal education beyond high school is preferred.
- Previous lifeguard experience preferred.
Other Requirements:
This position has the following special requirements:
- Walking, and climbing to access equipment.
- Carrying, and lifting supplies and items weighing up to 40 pounds to waist height.
- Bending, kneeling, and reaching to maintain equipment
- Sight, wrist movements, and feeling to perform lifesaving duties
- Talking, and hearing to communicate with employees and guests.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment in hot summer temperatures (should not exceed 105 F heat index)
- This position involves working extensively outdoors around small children.
