ROPES COURSE INSTRUCTOR

Summary/Objective

The purpose of this position is to supervise and facilitate trainees, adults, and children, on high ropes and low ropes challenge courses. Assist them in experiencing the sensations of accomplishment, and personal growth and develop a sense of strong interpersonal connection. Each Course is set in a non-traditional academic camp environment.

Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Facilitating and Supervising Trainees/Participants

  1. Conduct high ropes and low ropes training and ensure that trainees are adequately instructed in the individual ropes elements and understand their roles in the overall element execution.
  2. Provide knowledgeable explanations about each ropes element and perform instructional/safety briefings and element debriefs as assigned.
  3. Ensure that trainees are adequately instructed in all course contents and activities to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience.
  4. Escort and always accompany trainees while on the course site, maintaining orderly behavior and a professional learning environment.
  5. Serve as a positive professional role model for trainees.  NO PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH TRAINEES allowed unless required during instruction and outfitting of personal course equipment or in a life-threatening situation.
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Education: High School or G.E.D 

Experience: Experience working with children & adults (e.g., coaching, tutoring, teaching,) desired or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   Being comfortable working in high environments is a must.  Must possess excellent communication and instructional skills to instruct and teach others. Must be a positive role model.

Preferred Education and Experience

Previous experience in a similar ropes course instructional, work environment is a definite plus.

Work Environment/Physical Demands Summary

1. This position has the following special requirements:

  1. Walking and climbing (ropes, ladders, poles) to set up and access course elements.
  2. Standing for long periods (4-6 hours) or for duration of shift instructing & supervising course elements.
  3. Carrying and lifting equipment, supplies, and objects up to 50 pounds.
  4. Maintain the upkeep of all equipment, course elements, and the course grounds.
  5. Bending, kneeling, and reaching to set up and access course elements and store and retrieve supplies.
  6. Presenting instructional and safety briefings and debriefs.
  7. Talking and hearing to communicate with supervisors, guests, trainees, and employees in person and over the telephone.
  8. Ability to work in an outdoor environment in hot summer temperatures (should not exceed 105° F heat index).

2. Must be available to work a full shift (day, night, or weekend) based upon the Center’s needs and the individual’s preference and availability.

3. Must be able to complete the two-week training period and pass all required tests (practical as well as written) as specified by Course management.
