Part-Time Evidence Specialist

Responsible technical work involving the maintenance, preservation, documentation and disposal of evidence and recovered property in the possession of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, in accordance with Florida Statutes and Department policies. Self-initiative, the ability to work independently, and good judgment are necessary for this position.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Evidence Supervisor. Performance is evaluated through observation, results obtained, appropriate employee performance appraisals, and oral/written reports.
  • Responsible for the handling of evidentiary items on a daily basis to include*:
    1. Receiving
    2. Identifying
    3. Storing
    4. Inventorying
    5. Disposing
    6. Returning
    7. Checking in and out for Courts
    8. Packaging for FDLE
    9. Viewing with law enforcement personnel
      *These tasks encompass approximately 90% of their time
  • Handle evidence including bio-hazardous materials, i.e.: syringes with drugs and/or body fluids, clothing, money, sexual battery kits and devices, DNA samples for suspects and/or victims, firearms, and both blood and urine kits
  • Receive and maintain secure storage of ACSO physical evidence and recovered or abandoned property in accordance with all appropriate laws, ordinances, and procedures
  • Coordinate the disposition of physical evidence and recovered property Which requires that all items must be opened and visually inspected to verify content and subsequently disposed of in accordance with Florida Statues and Departmental guidelines
  • Maintain accurate records on all items in secure storage
  • Instruct deputies on department policy and procedures for handling and turning in evidence
  • Transport items to court and testify as to the chain of evidence
  • Maintain an inventory of impounded vehicles and coordinate the release of same when applicable
  • Provide information via telephone and in person and assist the public on the return of property, including bio-hazardous items, in accordance with ACSO standard operating procedures, through mail and/or in person
  • Responsible for the disposal of all bio hazardous items received by the agency which no longer possess evidentiary value
  • In accordance with ACSO DIR 143, personnel must receive annual training on the ACSO Exposure Control Plan
  • Responsible for performing routine office duties on a daily basis to include: data entry, filing, shredding, performing criminal background checks, faxing, and investigation of release paperwork

High School / GEDRequired
Associates DegreePreferred
Preferred Major(s):    Criminal Justice or other related field

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Experience with ACSO records management software such as SmartCOP and/or LINDAS is preferred
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
  • Current, valid Florida driver’s license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sit/stand for moderate periods

  • Speak, read, write, and understand English fluently
  • Lift/carry 50 pounds

  • Knowledge of proper procedures for handling evidence.
  • Knowledge of storeroom and inventory methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances pertaining to the collection and use of evidence and recovered property.
  • Knowledge of applicable departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Skilled in operating computers and other types of office equipment.
  • Skilled in providing expert testimony regarding the identification and storage of evidence.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate records accurately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies, the administration, co-workers, and the general public.
