Must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.

Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and requires the successful completion of a Level 2 criminal history background investigation prior to employment including finger printing and compliance with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements.  Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Must be able to swim 100 yards (4 lengths of the pool) continuously.

Must be able to swim 25 yards (1 length of the pool) front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke and 15 yards butterfly.

Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

Must possess or be able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, AED certification within 1 month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.


This is a seasonal recreational position responsible for providing swim lessons in a safe and positive environment, enforcing established rules and regulations, and rescuing those who are in distress. 
 
Individuals in the position will be a positive role model.  This position reports to the Camp Manager.
Exudes a positive customer service focus.
 
Advocates  building  organizational  culture  through  aligning  decisions  with  core  values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.

Conducts swim lessons. 

Maintains class attendance reports and course records.

Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.

Provides a safe and positive environment for class participants.

Communicates regularly with participants and patrons as appropriate, regarding student progress.

Prepares and delivers technical guidance, age appropriate, and skill focused lessons based upon participant’s abilities.

Completes incident/accident reports as necessary.

May be required to perform duties as a lifeguard when necessary, only if swim instructor is also current in Red Cross lifeguard certification. 

Work requires flexible hours (weekends, mornings, and evenings).

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR, and First Aid. 

Knowledge of pool safety guidelines.

Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

Skill in swimming, water rescues, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid.

Skill in the use of pool equipment, chemicals and tools.

Ability to effectively interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.

Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and/or in writing.

Ability to understand and communicate with children. 

Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the working day.

Ability to see clearly.

Ability to hear.

Ability to work in hot, cold, humid, wet and loud environments.

Ability to be proactive in regards to safety precautions, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action.
 
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
 
Ability to handle distressed swimmers and patrons in a professional manner.
 
Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
 
Ability to serve as a role model, demonstrating dependability, enthusiasm and creativity.
 
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Ability to think clearly in emergency situations when necessary. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with campers, parents, other employees and the general public.
 
Ability to recognize obvious safety hazards.

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds with or without assistance of another person or utilization of lifting equipment.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

This is a seasonal position.  The hours will vary and include weekdays, weeknights, weekends, and/or holidays.
