About the Role
Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be a key team member of our diverse, result-oriented team of mechanics who will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairing large machines and heavy duty equipment used in the forestry operations. The day-to-day duties will include adjusting, repairing and replacing worn and damaged mechanical, hydraulic and electrical parts on equipment such as tractors, log loaders, grapple/bogie skidders, logging/wood chippers, trucks, tractors, and excavators. We are looking for an energetic professional who is highly organized, punctual, efficient, and is able to work collaboratively with a small team of mechanics with different levels of experience and backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Repair and replace damaged or worn parts when scheduled or in an emergency
- Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications
- Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions, crawler heads, sharpen chipper blades, etc. utilizing hand tools, shop equipment, jacks, and cranes
- Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
- Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects
- Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles
- Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges
- Clean parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent
- Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools
- Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices
- Fit bearings and adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment
- Assemble gear systems, align frames and gears
- Weld broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools
- Adjust and maintain industrial machinery, using control and regulating devices
- Fabricate parts or items from sheet metal/plate when necessary
- Schedule maintenance on machines, tools and equipment, and keep equipment service records
- Direct workers who are assisting in the assembling/disassembling equipment or cleaning parts
- Research, order, and maintain parts inventory for services and repairs
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Post-secondary certificate or degree in engineering OR training as a mechanic (a plus)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with diesel and heavy equipment repair
- Welding experience (a plus)
- Manual dexterity and ability to lift at least 50 pounds
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record
