IntroductionTHIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.\n\n\nREQUIRED : California Motor Vehicle Class A Commercial Driver's License with 18 months clean driving record. A clean driving record consist of no violations within 18 months. Tank (N) endorsement and Medical Certificate.\n\n\nMUST BE ATTACHED : Official DMV driver license history report showing a clean driving record for the last eighteen months,a Tanks (N) endorsement and a valid Medical Certificate are required for all patterns. Please note all attachments must be submitted under the RESUME tab which can only accept one (1) file. Applicants cannot make modifications to their applications once they have been submitted.\n\n\n\nSupplemental Questionnaire : A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. This is the journey-level class in the operation of heavy trucks. Heavy Truck Drivers operate a variety of heavy trucks and may be assigned lead responsibility over a small crew. \n\nHeavy Truck Drivers differ from Truck Drivers by being assigned outdoor maintenance and construction work. Truck Drivers, by contrast, are assigned delivery types of duties and do not participate in heavy construction.\n\n\n\nFor more detailed information about the job classification, visit : Heavy Truck Driver (#9325)\n\n\n\nVACANCY : \n\n\nThe current vacancies for Heavy Truck Driver are located within the Maintenance and Operation Division of Public Works Agency. Work locations\nare in Hayward and Dublin, CA.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nEITHER I\n\nThe equivalent of one year of full-time experience as a Truck Driver in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)\n\n\nOR II\n\nThe equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a Laborer or an equivalent or higher-level construction / maintenance type class in the Alameda County classified service. (Non- classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) \n\n\n\nOR III\n\nThe equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a Truck Driver in construction or road maintenance work. \n\n\n\nLicense : Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class A Commercial Driver's License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the past eighteen (18) months; a Tanks (N) endorsement and a valid Medical Certificate are required for all patterns.\n\n\nSpecial Requirement : Federal law and County policy require that positions in the class of Heavy Truck Driver are subject to post-offer / pre-placement / pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. \n\nWorking Conditions : \n\n

  • Heavy Truck Drivers are subject to 24-hour call out and must actively participate in the program. \n
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions \n
  • Subject to intense heat while applying chipseals, asphalt, crackseats, etc. \n
  • Work on uneven surfaces. \n
  • Subject to loud noises. \n
  • Work in confined spaces. \n
  • Contact with dust, dirt, poisonous plants, dead and live animals, used syringes and condoms, feces, urine, chemicals, paints, petroleum products, etc. \n
  • Work in high traffic areas. \n
  • Subject to climbing ladders, working from heights, working in moving water, bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects, crawling through small spaces, working overhead, etc. \n\nNOTE : The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination. \nKNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSThe most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies : \n\n\nKnowledge of : \n
  • CA Biennial Inspection of Terminal (BIT) regulations pertaining to Class A Drivers, Including Hours of Service, Daily Vehicle Inspection reports and Drivers Logs \n
  • Pertinent provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code. \n
  • Basic road maintenance methods, materials and tools. \n
  • Basic preventive maintenance. \n
  • Proper loading and trailering techniques. \n
  • Relevant construction safety procedures. \nAbility to : \n
  • Follow oral instructions. \n
  • Follow written instructions. \n
  • Read and write English. \n
  • Drive safely and skillfully. \n
  • Perform relatively heavy manual labor. \n
  • Detect and correct minor mechanical problems. \n
  • Act as lead for a small crew. \nEXAMINATION COMPONENTSTHE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS : \n\n\n\n A review of applicants' application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.\n A review of the supplemental questionnaire to determine the best qualified. Those candidates considered the best qualified will move on to the final step in the examination process.\n An oral examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates' final examination score.
