What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Production Intern position at Alameda County Water District?
Interns are temporary employees who provide support for District staff at varying levels and who receive on-the-job training. Interns are assigned to work on a broad range of projects and assignments in different District units. Interns work side-by-side with District staff to obtain working knowledge and training in the area of assignment related to their field of study. Placement in this classification is temporary, and permanent employment is not guaranteed.
The District may not employ an Intern for more than six (6) months full time (21-30 hours per week), or if working on a part-time schedule (20 hours or less per week), more than 1,000 hours or 125 days in a fiscal year. Subject to these fiscal year time limits, intern work assignments are limited to a maximum of 12 months.
Position involves working with environmental engineers to carry out assignments supporting the District's three drinking water production facilities, water distribution system, and drinking water compliance program. Interns will be supporting various projects and programs and will gain experience in water treatment processes, such as conventional filtration treatment processes and reverse osmosis technology, assist with updating drinking water regulatory plans and reports, and assist with distribution system-related programs such as the Main Cleaning Program. Typical tasks will include working with large databases, performing data analysis in excel, collecting samples in the field or laboratory and subsequent analysis with handheld or benchtop instruments, tracking lab samples, developing maps, and writing reports or procedures. Interns will work both in the office and in the field and must have a valid California driver's license.
Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in spreadsheets and data management. Superior math skills, as well as strong written and oral communication skills. At least Junior class standing. Completed coursework in environmental engineering, water treatment, groundwater resources, hydrogeology, chemistry, water quality and public health.
