What are the responsibilities and job description for the HS Academic / Career Advisor (25-26 School Year) position at Alamo Colleges - Memorial Early College H.S.?
Primary Purpose:
Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address the needs of special populations. Facilitate a successful transition of high school students to college or the workforce.
Education / Certification:
- Valid Texas Counselor or Administrator certificate preferred
OR
- Currently enrolled in Master’s Program leading toward a certification in administration or counseling.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to instruct students and manage behavior
- Skilled in working with computer tools, software, email and internet
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Three years of teaching experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Implement college readiness programs to prepare underachieving students for college.
- Implement programs that encourage students towards advanced academic opportunities.
- Implement programs that align the curriculum for grades 6 through 12 with postsecondary curriculum.
- Implement high school completion and success initiatives in grades 6 through 12 as approved by the commissioner.
- Create individualized graduation and postsecondary plans.
- Schedule frequent conferences with each student individually (regardless of academic level) to monitor future plans.
- Lead group sessions and parent nights on college-related issues, such as writing essays, getting recommendations, preparing for tests, applying for financial aid, and planning for careers.
- Hold a majors and career day, presenting different areas of study, career paths, and employment forecasts for graduates.
- Host a college fair with representatives from a variety of educational institutions: local community colleges, technical schools, large public universities, and smaller private liberal arts colleges.
Consultation
- Provides career advisement for students, faculty and staff, by providing personal interest assessments, career identification and planning, job readiness assessment, job coaching and job search training through individual appointments and walk in
- Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
- Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.
Assessment
- Participate in the planning and/or evaluation of the campus standardized testing program, including but not limited to TAKS, TELPAS, PSAT, SAT, District Curriculum-Based Assessments (CBA), etc.).
- Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students, and parents.
- Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment.
Program Management
- Support underachieving students through success in college preparatory classes.
- Provide summer programs for transition to high school.
- Maintain Career Services office with current resources (books, pamphlets, internet site references, etc.).
- Develop, organizes, and promote career related events both on campus and to the community.
Administration
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
Professional
- Adhere to the ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
- Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
- Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance ad learning the records retention schedule for department records.
