Role Summary
The Category Manager, Fuel Sourcing is a subject matter expert for all sourcing activities related to jet fuel supply and into plane services at Alaska Airlines. As an individual contributor, this role exercises considerable judgement to make decisions in strategic fuel sourcing efforts to optimize fuel spend and assure the ability to meet the demands of the operation.

Role Summary
The Category Manager, Fuel Sourcing is a subject matter expert for all sourcing activities related to jet fuel supply and into plane services at Alaska Airlines. As an individual contributor, this role exercises considerable judgement to make decisions in strategic fuel sourcing efforts to optimize fuel spend and assure the ability to meet the demands of the operation.
Key Duties
- Leads and executes annual fuel supply tenders and fueling vendor sourcing initiatives (RFPs).
- Applies analytical expertise to effectively negotiate and determine cost and performance objectives, assuring the ability to meet Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines fueling operational demands.
- Responsible for understanding all fuel industry standards, regulatory and compliance requirements and ensuring all agreements comply with these standards.
- Responsible for monthly pipeline and works together with Fuel Controller on monthly supplier nominations to ensure efficient supply for operation.
- Works quickly to address any potential supply disruptions and communicates planned actions while also developing processes to mitigate future supply disruptions.
- Across Fuel vendors and or partners internally and externally communicates, liaises, and negotiates to influence decisions, and facilitate the development of profitable and sustainable business relationships.
- Develops and manages the quality, cost, and performance of key suppliers through the vendor oversight process using effective communication and building strong working relationships as well as the financial forecasting models to ensure a thorough understanding of the financial impacts of the agreement, including scenario development and modeling within fuel sourcing.
- Works cross-divisionally to ensure fuel suppliers and vendors are meeting contractual obligations as well as communicating with suppliers to mitigate any supply risks to the operation.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
- 4 years of experience in buying, sourcing, procurement, or related area.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain or related field, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
- Vendor management experience, with a track record of sustaining strong customer and supplier relationships.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present and summarize complex information in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated analytical competence (e.g., cost/benefit analyses, contract modeling, etc.).
- Ability to work and to drive change in a decentralized organization, with strong team building and project management skills.
- Contracting and negotiation experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Experience with vendor oversight, including performance management and continuous improvement.
- Airline or supplier / vendor experience with commercial airline fueling.
