The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Southcoast Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for an Engineering Assistant 3 / Engineering Associate / Engineer/Architect 1 in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information

Engineering Assistant 3 - $44.03 Hourly/Overtime Eligible

Engineering Associate - $44.03 Hourly/Overtime Eligible

Engineer/Architect 1 - $3527.25 Biweekly/Overtime Ineligible

What You Will Be Doing

Engineering Assistant 3 / Engineering Associate

You Will Lead The Engineering Design Of Highways And Airports On Federally Funded Projects Under The General Direction Of a Registered Professional Engineer. Typical Design Elements Include Both New Construction And Rehabilitation Of Existing

  • Storm drain systems
  • Curb and gutter
  • Sidewalks
  • Street lighting systems
  • Traffic signal systems
  • Navigation aids
  • Roadways, runways, taxiways, and aprons
  • Signage; and,
  • Guardrail.

Work includes developing initial concept-level designs, vetting concept designs with the public and resource agencies for input, and finally producing construction-ready project plans, specifications, quantities, estimates, and engineering documents. Typically, this position is the lead designer on projects with low to mid-level complexity and assists as a specialist on complex projects.

Engineer/Architect 1

You Will Independently Lead The Engineering Design Of Highways And Airports On Federally Funded Projects As a Registered Professional Engineer. Typical Design Elements Include Both New Construction And Rehabilitation Of Existing

  • Storm drain systems
  • Curb and gutter
  • Sidewalks
  • Street lighting systems
  • Traffic signal systems
  • Navigation aids
  • Roadways, runways, taxiways, and aprons
  • Signage; and,
  • Guardrail.

Work includes developing initial concept-level designs, vetting concept designs with the public and resource agencies for input, and finally producing construction-ready project plans, specifications, quantities, estimates, and engineering documents. Typically, this position is the engineer-of-record on projects with low to mid-level complexity and assists as a specialist on complex projects. You will work in team directing project staff as well as reviewing support staff and consultants while assuring the project stays on scope, schedule, and budget.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Assistant 3

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or

A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

Engineering Associate

Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution

ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.

Engineer/Architect 1

Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 3, Engineering Associate, or Engineer/Architect 1 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
