Position Overview
Alaska General Seafoods- Ketchikan is looking for an experienced, organized, and hardworking individual to join our Safety Department as our EHS Coordinator. This is a seasonal position at our facility in Ketchikan, Alaska and requires that you are available to work June 1st, through roughly the September 5th depending on the Salmon run.
Safety Compliance Tasks
Daily
- Complete any Workers Compensation claim paperwork and submit to Insurance Portal; complete OSHA 301 forms; update the OSHA 300 log; assist employees and supervisors with completing internal injury/incident investigation and reports
- Clinic transportation as needed.
- Daily safety walkthroughs. Develop focus areas for each day of the week and inspect the busiest areas daily. Primary considerations include: housekeeping, trip hazards, use of seat belts on forklifts, use of hard hats around crane operations, proper ladder placement, electrical safety including extension cord use, blocked electrical panels, PPE use, exits are clear of obstructions, fire extinguishers on mounts, eye wash and drench stations are in position, gas cylinders are secured, and fire hose stations are equipped.
- PPE management regularly walk the production lines to make sure PPE is being used properly.
Weekly
- Eyewash station and emergency shower inspection; test water flow, refill water in mounted eyewash as needed, replace dust covers on spray nozzles
- First aid kits; inspect and replenish supplies
- Safety walk; should be accompanied by one or more key staff personnel; note action items and provide list to department managers; track items for correction
- Monitor daily/shift forklift and crane inspections
- Scan and email prior week's medical, training, and inspection logs to corporate Safety Manager
Monthly
- Fire extinguisher inspection
- Fire station and firefighting gear inspection
- Room smoke detector inspection
- Dock life ring inspection
- Portable ladders inspection
- Hallway/stairway emergency lights inspection
- Crane, hoists and rigging inspection logs; performed by Dock crew
- Drill coordination, documentation (fire, site evacuation)
Annual/Miscellaneous
- Chemical inventory update for Tier 2 Report, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) maintenance
- Safety Manual review; preseason
- Pre-, postseason room and area inspections
- Conduct and document preseason safety training for various key staff (varies by position)
- Ensure anyone who wears a respirator for work has been medically cleared to do so and has had fit testing and training
- Complete job hazard analyses (JHA) for each job position; if these were done in the past, review and update them as needed
Environmental Compliance Tasks
Daily
- Routine walk arounds
- Grinder and waste conveyance system inspection during rounds
- Grind size measurement
- Sea surface and shoreline monitoring
- Waste drum storage area inspection
- Universal waste storage area inspection (batteries, fluorescent bulbs/lamps)
Weekly
- Scan and email generated APDES permit records from prior week to corporate Environmental Compliance Manager
- Spill kit inspection
Monthly
- Review and address monthly EMS compliance checklists; identify action items and provide to Plant Manager and corporate Environmental Compliance Manager
- Collect seafood process water samples and ship to lab
- Take date/time-stamped seafood wastewater sampling photo(s)
- Calibrate pH and total residual chlorine instruments as needed; maintain calibration log
- Record pH, total residual chlorine and temperature of shipped sample
- Complete EMS monthly checklists and send to corporate Environmental Manager
Quarterly
- Collect storm water sample and ship to lab; monitor weather forecast for rain events
Annual
- Finalize waste inventory shipping manifest and provide to Dock crew lead for container loading and corporate Environmental Compliance Manager
- Ensure all records have been scanned and emailed to corporate
Wages: DOE
Experience Required: Environmental Compliance and Health/Safety Management experience preferred. OSHA 30 hour course required.
