Job Summary:
Alaska General Seafoods is seeking a skilled Iron Butcher Mechanic to join our seafood processing team in Naknek, AK. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining, repairing, and operating Iron Butcher processing machinery and other seafood processing equipment, including conveyors, processing pumps, grinders, and more. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude and experience with Iron Butchers.
The Iron Butcher Mechanic sets the standard for the department through a strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and teamwork. This role is essential in maintaining high production levels while ensuring machinery operates efficiently and safely.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Maintain, adjust, and repair Iron Butcher and similar heading and gutting machines to achieve maximum recovery and quality.
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and operation of Iron Butchers used in seafood processing.
- Troubleshoot, rebuild, and maintain pumps, motors, fans, and various equipment.
- Maximize fish recovery by ensuring proper machine operation and minimizing waste.
- Build, maintain, and repair hydraulic and pneumatic system components.
- Work in a safe manner and report safety hazards to the Plant Foreman
- Recognize and correct operator errors in a constructive and efficient manner.
- Ensure facility machinery operates effectively to support high production levels.
- Other duties as required to maintain the success of the facility and operations.
Competencies & Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Mechanical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical systems, components, and tools.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain various types of seafood processing equipment.
- Safety Awareness: Strict adherence to safety procedures, especially around heavy machinery and sharp tools.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly identify and resolve mechanical issues to maintain production efficiency.
- Communication: Clear communication skills to collaborate with production teams and equipment manufacturers.
- Teamwork: Ability to work closely with other maintenance and production staff.

- Adaptability: Willingness to adjust to changing work environments and new equipment.
Experience:
- 3 to 6 months of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with millwright work, hydraulics, pneumatics, plumbing, building maintenance, fabrication, and welding.
- Previous experience in the seafood or manufacturing industry is preferred but not required.
Work Environment & Schedule:
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, and extreme cold.
- May be exposed to high places, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, outside weather, and electrical hazards.
- Loud work environment due to machinery and processing operations.
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, handle tools, and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Must regularly lift 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required, including distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Important Considerations
AGS is a union plant. Union membership is required. Wage range is $29/Hr. - $DOE.
Housing and meals are free.
We will fly you to the plant from your nearest major international domestic airport and also fly you back, upon successful completion of the season..
