Hike & Float Rafting Manager


TIMEFRAME: April - October

QUALIFICATIONS: Driver's License, Wilderness First Responder (Required - available to receive on site), CPR/First Aid (Required), Swift Water Rescue (Required - available to receive on site)

 

The Hike & Float (H&F) Manager position manages the facilitation of all Skagway-based rafting day-trips operated by Chilkat Guides. The Hike & Float Manager is responsible for guest safety by ensuring guides adhere to all safety protocols and overseeing regular gear inspection and maintenance. This position oversees an assistant manager and a guiding staff of 10-16 guides. 

 

The Hike & Float Manager works closely with administrative staff to ensure a smooth flow of communication between the office and on-site operations. Site management, office responsibilities and guiding are all key components of this position. The Hike & Float Manager will report directly to the Skagway Program Manager. 

 

REQUIREMENTS 

  • 2 Years guiding, rafting preferred. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds repeatedly throughout each day on uneven ground. 
  • Must be comfortable speaking to and leading large groups of people. 
  • Possess or be willing to obtain a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) (or higher) and Swift Water Rescue (SWR) certifications. 
  • Knowledge of rafting equipment maintenance and inspection procedures. 
  • Possess or be willing to obtain a Skagway chauffer’s permit (must have clean driving record). 
  • Prior management experience preferred. 

 

 

SITE RELATED JOB DUTIES 

  • Run safe, efficient and high-quality programing. 
  • Maintain effective communication between office and guides. 
  • Ensure all guides understand and adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined in the Skagway Guide Manual, Employee Manual and Emergency Response Manuals through delegation and direct management of the team. 
  • Immediately addressing any performance or safety issues with guides as they occur. 
  • Ensure all emergency response equipment is correctly stationed, complete and up to date. 
  • Maintain all program equipment throughout the season and follow company procedures for ordering new equipment in a timely fashion. 
  • Oversee start-up and close-down operations of the site at the end of the season (full-season contract required) 
  • Provide continuing training opportunities for guides throughout the season. 

 

OFFICE RELATED JOB DUTIES (please note that many of these are shared responsibilities): 

  • Provide written weekly reports to Skagway Program Manager. 
  • Schedule and lead program and guide meetings/evaluations. 
  • Weekly meeting with Operations and/or Skagway Program Manager. 
  • Time sheets and payroll – assist with employee timecard verifications. 
  • Monitor guide hours/overtime for balanced scheduling. 
  • Oversee program merchandise inventory and sales. 
  • Assist in organizing guide appreciation evets: dinners and activities, etc. 

 

The above is a list of general responsibilities and is not comprehensive. Most importantly the H&F Manager must be flexible to react to varying needs of day-to-day operations. 

 

WORKLOAD 

  • 40-45 hours a week – may be more or less depending on time of season 
  • 50% site management 
  • 40% guide development/ administration 
  • 10% field time/active guiding 
  • Division of hours will vary throughout the season based on program needs (start-up, break-down, training, etc.). 


ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Employees may be called on to share driving responsibilities and potentially other part time office duties. Driving is an important part of the program and guides will be expected to not only be safe and abide by all local and state driving regulations but also to be entertaining for our guests. The drive to and from the climbing/zip site is an opportunity to enhance the guest’s experience by providing historical and interesting information about the city, its history, the beautiful outdoors surrounding us, and other types of trips and programs that the guests can participate in the future with AMG.


PROFESSIONALISM

AMG employees represent the company whether they are working with clients packing in the warehouse, or off the clock and hanging in town. AMG expects employees to always conduct themselves in a professional manner and provide a leading example in the community for the type of behavior associated with the quality guide service that employs them. We live and work in small Alaskan communities, poor/inappropriate behavior will quickly establish a bad reputation for an individual and reflect poorly on the company as a whole.  


LIVING SPACE AND RENT STRUCTURE  

Employee housing is located in downtown Skagway, the grocery store and other attractions are within walking distance from housing. Accommodations consist of shared rooms typically 2-4 beds to a room, although the largest room is a 6-occupant bunkroom. Each house features shared bathrooms, a kitchen area, and living room. Employees residing in housing are expected to respect others and maintain a clean living area. Rent procedures are outlined in the Employee Manual. The two downtown houses share a large yard and mountain views, providing a fantastic base for our team.  

Additional Notes  

  • Rent deductions are made twice a month with 50% of the month’s rent deducted from the 1st and 2nd paycheck.  
  • Rent is prorated for the first month, rent for the last pay period will be deducted in full even if you vacate housing early.  
  • Employees must vacate housing within 48 hours of their final shift unless other arrangements have been approved by management.  
  • Failure to abide by rules outlined in the employee manual and housing agreement may result in immediate expulsion from employee housing. 
  • Pets - No Cats, No Dogs. First season employees may not have pets in employee housing. Any other pets must be approved by management.


STANDARD DRESS AND PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE

Alaska Mountain Guides requires guides to maintain a professional image at all times. The standard Skagway uniform is your name tag, AMG uniform shirt and/or guide jacket with guide or Carhartt style pants and closed toed outdoor shoes/boots. AMG requires staff to be clean with appropriate hygiene and appear professional while working. 


TRAVEL AND LOGISTICS

Employees are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Skagway, AMG will assist wherever possible in helping outline necessary steps in travel plans. Please make arrangements with a few days on either end of the season for mishaps.
