- Under general supervision, Security Officers are responsible for responding to facility and medical emergencies, proactive protection of persons and property against harm, loss, or disturbance resulting from disruptive behaviors on campus or during patient care, and coordination with leadership and/or law enforcement/emergency services concerning criminal acts, accidents, and investigations.

- Responsibilities require the ability to interpret, apply, advise and enforce organizational safety and security policies/procedures and state and/or federal laws within legally recognized guidelines.

Summary:

Responsibilities:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

- Responds to facility and medical emergencies, proactive protection of persons and property against harm, loss, or disturbance resulting from disruptive behaviors on campus or during patient care, and coordination with leadership and/or law enforcement/emergency services concerning criminal acts, accidents, and investigations.

- Performs and responds to and assists with facility and medical emergencies, safety and security alarms, and calls for assistance campus wide. May deploy use of force techniques and tools at times for physical restraint of subjects.

- Security Officer duties require maintaining regular, reliable, and predictable attendance to support 24/7 operational coverage, including holidays and weekends; and the ability to function effectively in dangerous and/or high stress environments during routine assistance, emergencies, investigations, patient watch, and other healthcare security functions that involve contact with the public, patients, staff, and other personnel or visitors, frequently requiring the use of effective communication through active listening and de-escalation techniques for tactful resolution or control of situations and/or complaints.

- Provides customer service focused assistance by providing information and assistance while controlling access to facilities and enforces visiting procedures within scope of authority. Exhibits high standards of integrity and ethics and a neutral and businesslike demeanor.

- Patrols buildings, grounds, and parking lots on foot. Monitors activity in and out of buildings, provides proactive surveillance and reporting to prevent vandalism, theft, fire, and disturbances within or around campus, protection of accident and/or crime scenes, and secures evidence to ensure proper chain of custody and transfer for law enforcement; actively engages in each security interaction with a customer service approach.

- Performs patient observation to include behavioral health patients to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Carries out physician orders in administration of medical restraints. Assists healthcare professionals evaluating or treating a patient as directed by the healthcare professional. Responds to Code calls and performs medical intervention to the level of officer training as needed.

- Assists patient family members as needed by providing them with direction, assisting with property and connecting them with needed services.

- Records daily log entries and incident reports according to established department guidelines using appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Security Officer II:

- Performs vehicle patrols of all ANTHC campus buildings, grounds and parking lots.

- Trains and mentors Security Officer I employees through observation, coaching, auditing, and debrief sessions.

- Proactively analyzes and identifies incident trends, repetitive incidents or situations, and unusual circumstances that might have an adverse impact on services provided to ANTHC.

- Assists with incident management, to include task prioritization, staff dispatch, and escalation to ensure client's problems are handled as expeditiously as possible.

Security Officer III:

- Performs all duties of a Security Officer I and II.

- Trains and mentors Security Officer I & II employees through observation, coaching, auditing, and debrief sessions.

- Assists with development and creation of content, including training outlines, plans with clear learning objectives, instructional methods (such as individual training, group instruction, online training, lectures, demonstrations, conferences, meetings and workshops), and determines appropriate methods of evaluation.

- Ability to perform the duties of a Security Sergeant in the absence of a sergeant, to ensure the continuity of the chain of command. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Assisting Security Lieutenant with command of shift or serve in a command role during the absence of supervisory staff.

- Assist and direct security officers in the performance of their duties.

- Utilize officer discretion in the prioritization of duties and the assignment of officers, while simultaneously determining when to escalate issues through the necessary and established channels.

Knowledge and Skills:

- Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.

- Knowledge of basic security concepts and procedures.

- Knowledge of safety, infection, and quality control standards.

- Skilled in administering first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other emergency response procedures.

- Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.

- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.

- Ability to interpret, apply, advise and enforce organizational safety and security policies/procedures and state and/or federal laws within legally-recognized guidelines.

- Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies.

- Ability to solve problems on an independent basis.

- Ability to accurately receive and transmit information by radio, telephone or computer system.

- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

- Ability to translate observations and information into legible, complete and accurate reports.

- Ability to perform multiple tasks rapidly and accurately under a crisis condition.

- Ability to establish priorities and pass on information as needed.

- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner.

- Ability to work successfully with people involved in stressful situations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:

- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION:

Security Officer I

- Non-supervisory – One (1) year customer service experience.

Security Officer II

- Non-supervisory – One (1) year experience in security or safety for healthcare, military, or any State, Local or Tribal entity.

Security Officer III

- Non-supervisory – Two (2) years’ progressive experience in security or safety for healthcare, military, or any State, Local or Tribal entity.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION:

All:

- Must possess and maintain valid Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.

Security Officer I

- FEMA Incident Command System Training ICS-100 & 200 certificate of completion within 30 days of hire.

Security Officer II

- Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under ANTHC’s insurance program.

- FEMA Incident Command System Training ICS-100 & 200 certificate of completion and obtain FEMA Incident Command System Training ICS-700 & 800 certificate of completion within 60 days.

- Possess Basic Healthcare Security Officer Certification through International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) within 60 days.

Security Officer III

- Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under ANTHC’s insurance program.

- ICS-100 & 200, 700, 800 certificate of completion within 60 days of entry into position.

- Advanced Healthcare Security Officer Certification through International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) within 60 days of entry into position.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION:

- Possess an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university or a minimum of two (2) years of security, military, or law enforcement related employment experience. The two years’ experience may be a combination of post-secondary education and work experience.

- Proficiency with computers, and aptitude to learn new software and systems.

- Experience with security equipment and surveillance systems.

- Law enforcement or healthcare security experience.

Security Officer I

- ICS-100 & 200, 700, 800 Certificate of Completion

Security Officer II

- ICS-100 & 200, 700, 800 Certificate of Completion

Security Officer III

- International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Supervisor Certification.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Must be a minimum of 21 years old.

obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
