Summary:
Under general supervision, performs ultrasonic imaging examinations for patients in ANMC clinics.
Responsibilities:
All –
- Performs ultrasonic imaging examinations according to department procedures.
- Locates and records internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs, and identifies any anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions.
- Performs ultrasound evaluations, including screenings, film interpretation, and level 3 obstetrical ultrasounds. Assists physician with invasive procedures.
- Performs portable procedures when needed.
- Adjusts equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts.
- Monitors the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes.
- Recognizes abnormal changes and immediately notifies physician.
- Evaluates test results for clarity and accuracy; able to review tests with peers.
- Informs physicians of preliminary findings as requested and according to Department procedures. - Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers.
- Maintains patient charts, enters diagnosis and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed.
- On call responsibility is an expectation of the position with on-site arrival within one (1) hour of contact.
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment and workspace.
- Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair.
- Trains and cross-trains other clinical staff as required.
- Instructs patients in pretest preparation, answers questions and explains procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST II:
- Acts as a mentor for Ultrasound Technologist I.
- May train Technologists and students as required.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST III:
- Mentors Ultrasound Technologist I, II and students.
- Assists in improvements and processes in the department.
- Takes on leadership role in absence of lead technologist.
Other information:
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS -
- Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.
- Knowledge of ultrasound film processing techniques.
- Knowledge of diagnostic imaging equipment.
- Knowledge of anatomy/physiology and disease process.
- Knowledge of ultrasound imaging examination protocols and patient preparation for evaluation.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, sterile practices, infection control, and other applicable practices.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:

- Associate’s Degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Progressively responsible work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST I:
- None
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST II:
- Non- Supervisory: Two (2) years of professional work experience in Ultrasound.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST III:
- Non- Supervisory: Four (4) years of professional work experience in Ultrasound.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
All:
- Current Basic Life Support card required.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST I:
- Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (ARDMS) or be registry eligible and complete registry within six (6) months from start of position.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST II:
- Current Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (ARDM) Registry.
ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST III:
- Abdomen (AB), Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
