Summary: Provides oversight of the activities for the respiratory department during a specific shift including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, precepting or mentoring staff, assuring appropriate utilization of resources, and providing oversight for the provision of quality care in a manner satisfying to patients.

Responsibilities: Performs all duties included in the respiratory therapist job description. Evaluates one’s own respiratory practices in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statues and regulations, identifying short and long-term professional goals. Maintains current knowledge, serves as a resource on departmental policies, procedures and processes, and assists in assuring compliance. Assists in finding creative solutions to issues and contributes knowledge to process and quality improvement. Mentors other in areas such as competency, documentation, equipment use, plan of care, National Patient Safety Goals and participation in in-service education. Exhibits a general understanding of the process for dealing with ethical dilemmas and coordinates the process for obtaining an ethics’ consult. Coordinates respiratory therapy work flow for all areas were respiratory patient care services are required in order to facilitate the provision of timely and effective care. Provides and ensures safe, quality patient care. Communicates effectively with patients and families to resolve issues and provides service recovery when needed. Participates in daily rounds and other patient satisfaction activities. Performs routine environment of care rounds and facilitates resolution of issues. Assures patient privacy is protected and confidentiality of information is maintained by respiratory therapists assigned to units. Participates on a hospital or departmental level committee as requested. Assists in assuring appropriate utilization of respiratory supplies and equipment. Maintains supply levels and equipment throughout the hospital. Assures appropriate utilization of staff on unit by preparing staff schedules, overseeing staffing for shift and making patient assignments to meet patient needs in an efficient and cost effective manner Regularly attends hospital wide bed meetings. Assists with hiring, orientating, precepting, coaching and evaluating staff. Evaluates care given by staff. Coaches to improve care. Establishes effective work relationships with staff and supports action plans in meeting staff satisfaction goals. Understands, articulates, supports and serves as a resource for the components of the nursing bundle. Including observation and coaching of staff. Maintains professional, effective and timely communication with physicians, other departments, (fast track) patients and families, staff, EMS partners and community members. Provides departmental leadership in the absence of the unit director/manager/supervisor. Meets or exceeds productivity standards Assures respiratory patient work flow is efficient. Distributes staff assignments and resources to meet respiratory patient services needed throughout the hospital. Role model for teamwork, fills assignments , cleans equipment, assists others with their assignment, recognizes when staff members are overwhelmed and adjusts assignment according; balances assignments, delegates appropriately. Assists in providing positive impressions to patients and visitors, promotes a caring and compassionate approach to all interactions. Performs other duties as assigned.

S kill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

M INIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

A n Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy. Equivalent knowledge, experience, education, or training may be substituted for education.

M INIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

1 -year of respiratory experience with neonatal, pediatric, and adults patients or previous charge respiratory therapist or supervisory experience.

M INIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

C urrent Registered Respiratory Therapist credential through the National Board of Respiratory Care.

C urrent Basic Life Support card required.

A dvanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program certifications are required for the respiratory department.

A ccording to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.
