Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary: Under general supervision, provides support for physicians and nurses in the Emergency Department by performing tasks that assist in the care and treatment of patients.

Responsibilities:

Provides support for physicians and nurses by performing a variety of tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs, consistent with the scope of practice for an unlicensed practitioner.

Responds appropriately to requests for assistance and facilitates the timely flow of patients through the department, ensuring the unit is clean, stocked, and ready to receive and treat patients at all times.

Assists with physical examinations and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Obtains vital signs, provides comfort, and assists with patient and family needs. At the direction of a licensed health care provider, provides patient care by performing phlebotomy and 12 lead EKGs, transports patients to other departments, and places patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors.

Performs basic emergency medical procedures such as point of care testing, thermal applications, non- sterile soaks, application of simple dressings, and IV removal.

Demonstrates competency in approved orthopedic procedures such as orthopedic splints and devices, and fitting patients for crutches.

Obtains and transports lab specimens.

Prepares patients for initial exams, interventions, transport, and discharge.

Observes patients experiencing suicidal ideation, behavioral health issues, or other safety concerns to ensure safety and stability. Reports significant changes or unusual occurrences to primary registered nurse (RN). Records and reports all information within scope of knowledge.

Utilizes effective communication and problem solving skills to promote a positive work environment and resolve conflict. Collaborates with personnel in nursing and supportive services and with members of the health care team to promote respect in delivery of patient care.

Documents patient information and care provided.

Prepares patient rooms and participates in general housekeeping duties as directed by the nursing staff. Cleans equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair.

Stocks supplies as needed.

Trains and cross-trains other technical staff as requested.

Completes Daily Checklists as required.

Represents the organization and the department in a professional and courteous manner.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Emergency Technician II
Act as a preceptor for new hire employees.
Active participation in a unit or hospital wide council.
Participate in at least one specialty training relating to patient safety (i.e. falls, splinting, present on admission, etc.)

Emergency Technician III
Precepts new hire employees.
Active participation in a unit or hospital wide council.
Participate in at least one specialty training relating to patient safety, injury prevention (i.e. falls, splinting, present on admission).
Participate in providing training for skills fairs or other training venues.
Obtain interdepartmental training to assist in development of training for skills related to trauma, stroke, EKGs, psychiatric care and any others determined as needed by supervisor.
Assist department leadership by performing audits or other department improvement surveillance.
Provides input to department leadership on process improvement opportunities or be involved in a workgroup to support implementing change process.

Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to an emergency department.
Knowledge of universal precautions.
Knowledge of basic anatomy and disease processes.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal and local regulations and requirements.

Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
Skill in coordinating multiple departments and individuals for completion of a single task.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Emergency Technician I
Non - supervisory - Zero (0) year of work experience.

Emergency Technician II
Non - supervisory - Two (2) years’ experience working as an Emergency Tech and/or comparable experience.

Emergency Technician III
Non-supervisory - Four (4) years’ experience working as an Emergency Tech and/or comparable experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Seeking Degree or certification in nursing, healthcare, EMT, CMA, or CNA.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Experience working in the medical or healthcare field is preferred.
