Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary:

Under limited supervision, transports soiled medical equipment, performs decontamination, cleaning, inspection, cleaning verification testing, assembly & packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment. Performs intermediate-level to high-level disinfection, distribution of processed medical equipment for the entire ANMC campus.

Responsibilities:

Sterile Processing Technician I

Performs work under direct or general supervision, may only perform simple or routine aspects or the position.

Follows standard precautions to control the spread of infection while in decontamination, prep and disinfection processing areas.

Responsible for practice according to manufacturer recommendations for high level disinfection to include quality control monitoring, and assembly of instrumentation. Responsible for inventory management to meet operations in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.

Complies with quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure processing equipment and instruments are functioning properly. Manages non-compliance to coordinate replaces and service.

Inspects and verifies instruments and equipment function properly. Submits work orders for equipment and maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment from service.

Performs quality assurance monitoring for all sterilized products before instrumentation is released for patient care. Makes decisions for release of instrumentation based on industry standards.

Participates in maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. Responsible for productivity reports.

Maintains a clean and organized work area. Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Sterile Processing Technician II

Performs all duties of the “Sterile Processing Technician I”

Mentors trainees.

Sterile Processing Technician III

Performs all duties of the “Sterile Processing Technician II”

Directs and assists in the daily task assignments for completion of work each day.

Assures that inventory activities and reports are monitored weekly.

Monitors and maintains training requirements to assure completion of facility and department standards.

Performs high level, complex, and responsible tasks within this position, train lower level employees, and generally work with general or minimal direction.

Sterile Processing Technician II and III

Knowledge of the regulatory requirements as defined by Hospital Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) standards and in compliance with

ANSI/AAMI ST79 guidelines and sterilization procedures for various instruments and equipment.

Knowledge of the regulatory requirements, as defined by Hospital Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)

Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) standards and in compliance with ANSI/AAMI ST58 and

ANSI/AAMI ST91 guidelines and high-level disinfection procedures for various instruments and equipment.

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation.

Knowledge of various types of sterilization materials and equipment used in order to select the appropriate method of sterilization for particular equipment.

Knowledge of the case cart system.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

All

A high school diploma or GED equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION Minimum qualifications are based on level of position. Years of experience may be used to substitute certification requirements; an additional two (2) years of experience will be required if substituting the requirement of a single certification. Certification is preferred and staff will be encouraged to obtain certification when eligible.

Sterile Processing Technician I

Non-supervisory – None Required.

Experience and/or relevant certification preferred.

Sterile Processing Technician II

Non-supervisory – Two (2) years of Sterile Processing AND Certification as CRCST or CER OR Minimum of Four (4) years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.

Processing Technician III

Non-supervisory – Four (4) years experience as a Sterile Processing Technician AND Certification as CRCST, CIS, CER (must have two (2) certifications) OR Minimum of Eight (8) years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.
