Power Plant Operator Apprentice
AP&T has a full time opening for a Power Plant Operator Apprentice in our Skagway location. Our successful candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, flexible, detail and safety oriented, willing to follow directions and willing to travel. They will possess excellent team and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with minimum supervision.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Record keeping of all diesel and hydro generation facilities
Assist with the installation and maintenance of diesel generators and associated accessory equipment
Assist with the installation and maintenance of hydro generators and associated accessory equipment
Safely troubleshoot problems with electrical components
Maintenance of plant buildings and grounds
Power plant fuel tank fuel handling and fuel dips
Evening and weekend on-call duty
Some travel may be required
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Must live or be willing to live within 15 minutes of Skagway
Willingness to learn and the ability to enter and complete a 4-year apprenticeship position
Must be able to participate in an on-call rotation to respond to power-related emergencies
Willingness to work with electrical circuits
Ability to use computers and navigate programs such as: Microsoft Excel, SCADA, and answer email
Ability to travel to various locations in Alaska to perform required duties
A United States passport is required for occasional travel
Alaska driver's license and have the ability to obtain an AK CDL
First Aid & CPR
Desired Qualifications:
Some welding experience preferred
Some electrical and mechanical background preferred
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to safely lift up to 70lbs on a regular basis
Must be able to work overhead and in a crouching manner
Must be able to move 55-gallon drums of oil
Job requires frequent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, crawling, speaking, hearing, seeing, depth perception, color vision, stooping, kneeling, crouching, balancing, and reaching/working overhead.
This position requires work inside and outside in conditions inherent to an industrial environment.
The position requires wearing PPE and must refrain from wearing loose clothing.
The starting pay for this position is $28.84 per hour with a step increase every 1000 hours.
