What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Aquarium/Avian Assistant position at Alaska SeaLife Center?
Summary:
This position is responsible for the routine care and maintenance of the avian collection and fish/invertebrate collection at the ASLC under the supervision of senior husbandry staff. This position also participates in daily talks and tours.
Education/Training Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, biology, zoology or related field required. One to two years work experience in the animal care field. Experience within AZA institutions preferred.
Essential Duties:
1. Assisting in the care and maintenance of the ASLC Aquarium (fish/invertebrate) and avian collection, both research and exhibit.
2. Daily diet preparations, routine cleaning of bird habitats, holding areas, food preparations areas and work areas including snow removal when necessary.
3. Follows established routines for animal care, food preparation and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment.
4. Becomes familiar with basic handling protocols and quarantine protocols.
5. Takes part in improvements to habitats and the animal enrichment and wellbeing programs.
6. Learns requirements for efficient and safe use of equipment and supplies used by the department.
7. Assists other staff in facilitating research sampling and data collection utilizing accepted research and husbandry protocols.
8. Cross trains with other husbandry staff for efficient use of staff resources.
9. Maintains written and computer-based records.
10. May be asked to provide support for the rehabilitation department to aid in the rehabilitation of species when needed.
11. Develops skills in public speaking by taking part in daily talks and tours.
12. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and striving towards providing a high standard of service.
13. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Must possess organizational skills; be self-motivated; and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various levels in the organization. Ability to interface with researchers as required.

Must be able to lift and move 50lbs, run short distances if required, and have a good sense of balance.
- Ability to work around small and large groups of people. Ability to work safely with and around large, wild animals. Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.
