Job Description

  • Note : SISD does not currently host J1 or H1B Visa teachers.

Position Summary :

A teacher is responsible for facilitating student learning by implementing specific curriculum within the Southeast Island School District. Inherent in this responsibility are the professional practices related to academic knowledge, educational skills, personal judgment, and ethical behavior as articulated in the Alaska Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and the Standards for Alaska's Teachers.

Reports to : School Assistant Principal or Principal

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Baccalaureate degree in appropriate academic field or verifiable training / experience in Alaska Native language / culture or in a vocational / technical field.
  • Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate with endorsement(s) appropriate to assignment.
  • Certificate of Health signed by a licensed health care provider.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school district related matters, students, families, and staff.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Other additional areas of endorsement.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to safely, regularly move items up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to move and position self as necessary to meet mission (e.g. stoop, kneel, crawl, bend, turn, reach, climb, balance, traverse, or other movements).
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Adherence to all district health and safety policies.
  • Adherence to professional dress and appearance expectations as appropriate to assignment.
  • Detect and accurately interpret information on a computer screen and printed matter.
  • Communicate and accurately exchange information so that others may understand in person, via telephone, via audio / video conference, etc.

  • Ability to supervise and maintain all aspects of the classroom or other learning environments.
  • Coordinate all instructional activities to conform to state and District laws, regulations, and policy guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and develop positive relationships with students, families, staff, and the public.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, school staff, and public.
  • React to change and transition productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain, and organize appropriate records, reports, and forms as required, including but not limited to grades, attendance, lesson plans, and district forms.
  • Proficiency in computers and the use of instructional technology.
  • Recognize and fulfill the role as an agent of the District in all work and communication to display a positive attitude and image of the District, to join cooperatively and positively in all District initiatives, and to support and comply with all given directions.
  • Communicate concerns to administration quickly and clearly with the objective of solving problems as they arise.

  • Responsibilities :

  • Support the mission of the Southeast Island School District.
  • Carry out all directives from District Administration.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, Board Policies, and Administrative Regulations of the District.
  • Be familiar with and comply with the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Personally demonstrate and facilitate others in demonstrating respect for the individual and cultural characteristics of others.
  • Facilitate, monitor and assess student learning.
  • Implement all adopted programs and materials as set forth in District curriculum documents.

  • Utilize District programs and tools for planning and grading as directed.
  • Assess the progress of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required. Use common, district-adopted, or other suitable assessments as appropriate for summative, formative, and / or diagnostic purposes.
  • Clearly articulate objectives and learning goals for all lessons, units and courses and communicate these to students and families.
  • Provide and support methods for students to monitor their own learning progress as appropriate.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request from the principal.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Effectively and regularly integrate and use instructional technology tools to enhance learning opportunities for students.
  • Teacher with additional Special Education endorsement may also have special education instructional responsibilities including :
  • Plan and provide a variety of effective instructional and evaluative techniques, including appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings.

  • Through the IEP process, facilitate development for students with disabilities in areas of need such as social, emotional, communication, gross motor, fine motor, and adaptive.
  • Use various diagnostic tools to identify specific educational and behavioral problems of eligible students.
  • Process teacher referrals.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Help teachers with implementation of individual educational programs.
  • Collect data and interpret relevant information from various sources on a child's performance.
  • Design goals and objectives for the individualized education program with other team members.
  • Select and / or modify instructional methods to promote successful learning of identified students.
  • Confer with all individuals, including the students, when appropriate, in developing an individualized education program.
  • Implement specific educational and / or behavioral programs.
  • Assist in implementing educational and / or behavioral programs within the regular education classroom when appropriate.
  • Develop and manage the special education programs in collaboration with general education staff.
  • Provide appropriate instruction for identified students as specified in individual IEP's.
  • Obtain and complete all necessary records on students referred to special education and / or receiving special education services.
  • Assure the implementation of IDEA in addition to the State of Alaska Special Education Regulations.
  • Assure that parents of students with disabilities receive parental rights and due process and are knowledgeable of these rights and procedures.
  • Monitor, train, and supervise special education paraprofessionals.
  • Assist in distributing information regarding Child Find activities to the community and school staff.
  • Create and maintain a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and contributing members and which is conducive to learning for all students.
  • Create and maintain a safe environment in accordance with school handbook and established emergency procedures.
  • Work as a partner with parents, families, and the community.
  • Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.
  • Participate in and contribute to curriculum development.

  • Participate in and contribute to professional development.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional ethics.
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.
