Hydaburg City School District is located in the small village of Hydaburg on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. Hydaburg School is the only school in the District. It serves students in grades pre-K through 12; elementary students and secondary students are taught in separate buildings. Job Summary :

The High School English and Social Studies Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and rigorous instruction in English language arts and social studies to high school students. This position requires the development of lesson plans that align with Alaska State Standards, fostering critical thinking and communication skills, and integrating culturally relevant materials that reflect the heritage and history of the region, particularly Indigenous perspectives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Plan, develop, and implement instructional programs in English and Social Studies that adhere to Alaska State Standards.
  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Utilize differentiated instruction and assessment strategies to meet students' varied learning styles and abilities.
  • Integrate Indigenous perspectives and local history into the curriculum to enhance cultural relevance and student engagement.
  • Develop and assess student work, providing timely feedback to support academic growth.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including grades, attendance, and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with other educators, staff, and community members to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Foster a classroom environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and collaboration.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school events as required.
  • Engage with parents and guardians to support student success and maintain open communication.

Qualifications & Requirements :

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Education, English, History, or a related field.
  • Certification : Must hold or be eligible to obtain an Alaska Teaching Certificate.
  • Experience : Prior teaching experience at the high school level preferred.
  • Skills :
  • Strong classroom management skills.

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to support all learners.
  • Experience with culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
