Job Summary:
The Clinic Nurse (CN) is responsible for the planning, monitoring, coordination, control, and evaluation of the daily operations of the Nursing Department. This individual must have excellent patient care skills and must exemplify the qualities and core values of the clinic. Must be able to work independently and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
The Clinic Nurse (CN) is an individual who provides support for our providers and safe care for our patients. The CN assists in patient care coordination and serves as a teacher, advocate and navigator for our patients within the context of our clinical care. The CN will be responsible for patient case management, providing direct nursing care and performing nursing assessments and triage of patient concerns. The clinic nurse must exemplify Alaska Women’s Health’s core values while strengthening clinical operations and improving patient outcomes. The CN reports directly to the Clinical Manager.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Provides professional triage of patients by telephone and in the office.
- Performs nursing assessments, general nursing care, and counseling patients.
- Triages results for provider review or for patient communication.
- Communicates results and treatment plans to patients as outlined by the provider and/or policies.
- Provides patient education in areas such as medication, pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions, chronic disease, perioperative and periprocedural.
- Works with other members of the team to coordinate patient care in areas such as referrals, scheduling, DME orders, care management and hospital/ER follow up.
- Sends prescriptions and refills to pharmacies as directed by the provider and/or policies.
- Executes nursing care under the direction of provider and/or policies such as: medication and vaccine administration, wound care, dressing changes, dressing application, suture or staple removal, collecting specimens (including vaginal or wound swabs and cultures), venipuncture, IV placement, catheterization, bladder scanning, UTI checks, pregnancy tests, fetal monitoring in non- stress test (with advanced training), fetal biophysical profile (with advanced training), amniotic fluid index (with advanced training), IUD string check, pessary and medication containing vaginal ring fitting and changes (with advanced training), assisting in procedures.
- Obtains prior authorizations as required by insurance.
- Navigates medication changes and prior authorizations due to insurance requirements under standing orders or provider guidance.
- Serves as liaison between providers and other clinical entities such as pharmacies, laboratories, government health offices, hospital units, and other clinics.
- Collaborates with clinical support staff (patient experience coordinators, medical assistants, medical scribes) and assists with prioritizing clinical tasks to ensure efficient workflow and improve patient outcomes.
- Educates, monitors and delegates tasks to medical assistants as necessary.
- Ensures all emergency equipment, medications, medical devices and clinical supplies are properly stocked, stored and logged (as applicable) according to policy.
- Participates in care team meetings, clinical meetings, staff meetings and other meetings as directed by the Clinical Manager.
- Documents telephone triage, nurse visits, patient education and patient instruction timely and accurately.

Job Qualifications:
- Knowledge of nursing processes and how they apply to the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Knowledge of commonly used medications, pharmacology, administration and side effects.
- Ability to plan, organize, and delegate tasks.
- Ability to interpret and apply medical orders.
- Complete knowledge of sterile field protocol.
- Understanding the need for evidence of consistent respect for patient confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and understand the English language.
- Ability to be proactive, able to anticipate problems before they occur.
- Current nursing license issued by the Alaska State Board of Nursing.
- Current BLS required.
- Minimum one-year experience working as a Nurse in a hospital, outpatient center, or medical office.
- Any other Certification/licensing that may be required for the position
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- This position frequently exposes the Clinical Support Staff to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
- It requires use of universal precautions when tasks are being performed that present the possibility of exposure to blood or body fluids; this includes the use of personal protective equipment and work practices.
- This position requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
- This position requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally it is necessary to lift and carry items greater than 50 pounds.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Frequent contact with employees, patients, and the public. Public contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people.
- Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc.
