PHLEBOTOMIST
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, performs clerical functions in the laboratory as well as collect specimens for clinical laboratory procedures. Insures that collected specimens are adequate for accurate laboratory results. Insures proper sanitary technique for patient and labora-tory personnel in the collection of such specimens. Insures confidentiality of patient infor-mation.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Answers the telephone and takes messages or directs caller to the appropriate staff personnel.
Collects urine samples using specimen laboratory toilet.
Performs fingersticks as appropriate.
Performs venipuncture for collection of specimens as appropriate.
Maintains a sanitary specimen collection area.
Maintains patient logs as necessary.
Maintains supplies for the phlebotomist area.
Assists with other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Understanding of medical and health center operation and records.
Establishes and maintains effective relations with employees and public.
Represents AAPHC to the public in a good and positive manner.
Understands the importance of good patient relations and common courtesy.
Understands the importance of quality control and sanitation for patient care and employee safe-ty.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school education.
Training in or experience in phlebotomy skills.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordi-nation. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color per-ception.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.
