What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Lifeguard position at Albany Area YMCA?
Position Summary: Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions, intense heat from the sun and irregular hours.
Typical Working Conditions: Position is in indoor and outdoor swimming pool environment, and requires automobile travel to branches, monthly in-service training, swimming conditioning, walking, bending, stooping, lifting up to 50lbs, verbal communication, hearing, seeing, and collecting daily revenue from program participation for the outdoor pool at the sports park.
Essential Function:
· Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
· Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures and within their scope of training according to the American Red Cross or whomever their certification is validated through
· Completes incident and injury reports when necessary when first responder care has been rendered
· Maintains effective, positive relationships with their supervisor, the members, participants and other staff.
· Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or state health department code for chemical levels in the pool
· Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is readily available when needed
· Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving, especially the bottom of the pool
· Performs secondary duties (such as maintenance duties, chemical readings and patron attendance counts per hour) as required when NOT guarding, or as long as these duties do not disrupt patron surveillance
· Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings
· Reports any broken or dangerous equipment that needs to be replaced or repaired in a timely manner

Qualifications:
· Minimum age of 16
· Certifications: CPR/AED/First Aid and Emergency Oxygen for the professional rescuer
· Maintain a valid Lifeguard certification through American Red Cross or equivalent
· Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness
· Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
Physical Demands
· Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness
· Meet strength and lifting requirements
· See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
· Cleaning around the pool deck when there are no patrons in the pool

- 4 hour shift
- 8 hour shift
- Weekends as needed
