Position Summary

The Student Operated Pharmacies (SOP) Pharmacist will assist with the operations and activities at a patient-centered clinical pharmacy that provides services to a medically underserved population, including prescription dispensing, health and wellness screening, immunizations, and counseling in the safe use of medications. They will also assist with training student pharmacists on experiential education rotations. The Pharmacist will comply with and ensure that student pharmacists comply with all state and federal regulations and established pharmacy policies and procedures.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain a prescription fulfillment system and clinical pharmacy services in a medically underserved area and/or serving a medically underserved population.
  • Assist with supervising student community pharmacists and ensures daily operations are in compliance with established policies and procedures, federal and state pharmacy rules and regulations and current standards of practice.
  • Review and interpret physicians’ orders for appropriateness to ensure that overdoses or under-doses have not been prescribed and that interactions, incompatibilities or toxic compounds will not result from combination of medications. Ensures that drugs are appropriately labeled, stored and utilized according to physicians’ instructions.
  • Dispense prescriptions to patients in accordance with pharmacy policy and with all state and federal regulations.
  • Counsel patients on safe use of medications and maintains accurate and up-to-date patient information.
  • Administer immunizations to clientele at the clinic and at community outreach programs.
  • Participate in community education events to optimize health outcomes in the community served; may conduct health and wellness screenings and provide advice on healthy lifestyles.
  • Suggest opportunities and initiatives to increase volume and develop services to make the business self-sustaining.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of instructional activities on the business, distribution and clinical aspects of community pharmacy practice for student pharmacists.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of profession and complies with national or state standards of Continuing Pharmacy Education to maintain professional competency and proficiency.
  • Ensure that the quality of professional services are maintained.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating quality assurance and process improvement activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations
  • Commitment to innovative patient-centered pharmacy practice and student-centered teaching and learning
  • Demonstrates ethical and professional behavior
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Displays a collegial approach to service

Education And Experience

  • BS in Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy required, Doctor of Pharmacy preferred
  • Current licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in New York State or eligibility to take the NYS Pharmacy Board exam
  • Current New York State Immunizer or ability to obtain certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or mentoring experience in a pharmacy setting
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a retail pharmacy setting
  • Experience working in a medically underserved area or with medically underserved populations, preferred
  • Previous experience as a preceptor or instructor of student pharmacists, preferred

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Additional Information

This is a part-time per-diem position in a health care facility open 6 days a week with various hours of operation. Rotating shifts as well as holidays and work during inclement weather will be required. Additional details pertaining to this position will be discussed during the interview process.
