DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The incumbent performs technical laboratory work collecting and analyzing sewage and industrial wastes for chemical, physical, and bacteriological characteristics. Work is performed under the supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technician. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Daily collection of various liquid and solids samples throughout two wastewater treatment plants for laboratory analysis;
- Performs routine laboratory analysis of untreated sewage, treated sewage, and industrial wastes including physical, chemical, bacteriological, and microscopic examinations;
- Assists in the scheduling and collection of off-site samples to support the Pretreatment Program;
- Coordinates with and delivers samples to off-site contract laboratories;
- Works with and trains operations staff in various analytical procedures;
- Keeps and maintains logs and analytical records on work completed;
- Cleans and sanitizes various laboratory equipment and bacteriological samples;
- Maintains a variety of complex laboratory equipment;
- Analyzes, carries out and recommend modifications to Standard Operating Procedures;
- Learns new scientific procedures as program needs develop;
- Assists in conducting special studies and tests for the improvement of the water pollution control processes;
- Prepares chemical media for analysis of sewage samples;
- Prepares varying solutions of reagents and standardizes reagents daily;
- Orders and maintains consumable laboratory supplies and chemical stocks;
- Assesses the acceptability of data produced through review of quality control/quality assurance.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Thorough technical skill in the operation and care of modern laboratory equipment and apparatus;
- Good knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, testing practices, principles, equipment, safety precautions and terminology used in the analysis, laboratory quality control of various sewage and industrial samples;
- Good knowledge of the principles of chemistry and bacteriology as it relates laboratory analysis;
- Good judgment and dependability;
- Good physical condition encompassing: the ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds including large sample containers and sampling equipment, the ability to climb up to four flights of stairs carrying equipment to collect a variety of samples, and the capability of reaching to operate equipment and access supplies and materials in storage cabinets;
- Ability to perform all types of tests relating to wastewater analysis and treatment;
- Ability to understand and carry out technical oral or written instructions;
- Ability to keep accurate and complete records;
- Ability to work standing at a lab bench performing repetitive sample analysis for long periods of time;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college with at least an Associate’s Degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory technology or a closely relate field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a NYS driver’s license at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
