The Logistics Center EMS Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating emergency medical services (EMS) to help manage hospital capacity, drive patient flow and ensure optimal timely patient care. This role involves dispatching EMS, monitoring real-time data, and facilitating and ensuring effective communication between EMS teams, hospital personnel, and other healthcare facilities.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Emergency transport management and dispatch coordination:
- Responsible for receiving, interpreting, processing and the prompt notification and activation of EMS agencies for emergent and non-emergent transportation.
- Ensure optimal coordination of EMS transporting patients into and out of the Albany Medical Center Hospital and between hospital campuses within the Albany Med Health System.
- Dispatch ambulances and emergency response teams to other healthcare facilities requesting transfer.
- Facilitate the coordination of clinical transport teams.
- Uses clinical expertise and judgment to help prioritize transportation and direct resources to appropriate locations for optimal throughput.
- Escalates transport delays.
- Communication:
- Serve as the primary point of contact between EMS teams and hospital staff, ensuring clear and timely information exchange.
- Relay critical patient information between care teams to help ensure preparedness.
- Capacity Management:
- Monitor hospital capacity and resource availability, include bed status and staff readiness.
- Collaborate with teammates within the Logistics Center to help manage patient transfers, admissions and discharges via EMS coordination and connectivity.
- Patient flow optimization:
- Work closely with clinical staff to assess specific patient needs and prioritize transports accordingly.
- Data Monitoring:
- Utilize computer systems and software to track and analyze data to monitor and support real-time decision making.
- Decision-making abilities:
- Make quick, informed decisions, particularly when prioritizing EMS requests.
- Apply clinical and industry knowledge for the appropriate activation and tracking of EMS resources.
- Attention to detail:
- Accurate documentation and real-time monitoring requires attention to detail to avoid errors that could impact patient care.
- Crisis Management:
- Respond effectively to high-pressure situations, maintaining composure during emergencies, critical transports, or major incidents.
- Emergency preparedness:
- Participate in drills and training exercises to prepare for mass casualty incidents or other emergencies, ensuring that protocols are well understood and practiced.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Regulatory compliance: Ensure and support compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding emergency medical services, data privacy and EMTALA.
- High School Diploma/G.E.D. - required
- 1-3 years Clinical (Hospital/EMS) Experience - required
- Communication and coordination (High proficiency)
