General Definition of Work :

Performs a variety of duties required to maintain a safe and secure environment in schools, centers, academies, or for community education programs held during or after school, or on weekends when scheduled. Enforces policies and regulations designed to create a culture of safety and security in the school district. Manages students' activity and behavior during school and at school-sponsored public events. Assists in response to emergency situations.

Essential Functions :

  • Supervises student activity in areas to include hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, bathrooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, and exterior school property throughout the school day;
  • Manages the Visitor Management Systems and greets and assists visitors;
  • Addresses unauthorized visitors, identifies intruders, recognizes unsafe or unexpected behaviors, and monitors unsecured entrances;
  • Assists school administration, staff, and students to uphold the school's code of conduct and safety policies. Responds immediately to requests for assistance;
  • Maintains a high level of visibility during student arrival, school day activity, and departure;
  • Builds and promotes positive relationships with students;
  • Identifies situations that could escalate into conflict and engages or intervenes to de-escalate or address student behavior;
  • Resolves disputes between students, encourages positive communication and works to minimize conflicts.
  • Acts as a liaison between students and teachers;
  • Assists principal and staff in ceasing altercations, arguments, or other forms of disruptive or illegal behavior by employing the appropriate response within ACPS policy;
  • Assists with locating students;
  • Monitors parking lots, car pick-up, and bus areas throughout the day and during student arrivals and departures. Enforces parking policies and direct vehicle traffic as needed;
  • Assists with the execution of emergency response procedures including evacuation, lockdown drills, and medical emergencies. Maintains functional knowledge of building systems and procedures to properly respond to emergencies;
  • Provides security at athletics events, graduations, and other events as requested. Engages the public in a professional manner;
  • Communicates effectively and timely with staff and promotes a positive work environment;
  • Completes written reports and provides statements as necessary;
  • Adheres to established work schedules and participates in meetings and training sessions;
  • Relates positively to and interacts with a non-traditional and diverse student and employee population. Promotes a fair and equitable school environment;
  • Assists school administrators with monitoring CCTV systems and evaluating student behavior;
  • Maintains knowledge and functional use of relevant technology and equipment. Operates computers, weapons detectors, Automated External Defibrillators, camera surveillance systems, radio communications, basic office equipment and other security equipment;
  • Participates in training for certification, and recertification and pursues professional growth opportunities;
  • Coordinates with and assists emergency response personnel (fire, EMS, and police) who respond to calls at or on school grounds;
  • Assists school administrators with the investigation of incidents and assists in student searches as directed;
  • Inspects the physical security of the building and reports any unusual conditions or maintenance problems to appropriate staff in a timely manner;
  • Provides testimony in court or before the School Board as needed;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Ability to follow procedures and directions. Must be able to maintain order in schools without physically restraining students. Ability to analyze situations and take reasonable and effective action while exercising good judgment. Knowledge of local, county, and state regulations requiring an alcohol-, drug-, weapons-, and tobacco-free environment. Must have knowledge and experience in working in a diverse environment that promotes an equitable learning environment.

Education and Experience :

High school diploma or achievement of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate plus at least one (1) year relevant work experience required. An associate's or bachelor's degree and additional specialized experience in safety and security or the behavioral sciences is preferred. Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment. Successful completion of the required School Security Officer certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty (60) days of hire and renewal certification annually. Must be current or willing to complete and maintain CPR / AED and first aid certification within 60 days of employment.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts :

Duties performed typically in school settings include gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional attendance of building-level meetings, division-wide meetings, and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary. Daily personal close contact with students to provide guidance and direction in movement to and from class during the school day and related activities. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and the public may be required. Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.
