GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
This position functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school. This position works with individuals engaged in physical activity in the prevention of injuries and illnesses, the recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of injuries and illnesses, the rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses, and the administration of the healthcare program. This position supports student-athletes’ ability to participate in practices and competition following a sports-related injury. Additionally, this position is responsible for coordinating and completing all administrative functions supporting student athletes’ injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning, as well as communicating with school administrators, coaches, and parents regarding a student-athletes' participation status. This position will assist in developing formal educational or instruction on subject matter related to athletic training or sports medicine for high school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attends athletic games and practices
- Provides and applies medical protective gear and prophylactic devices
- Advises athletes on proper use of equipment
- Provides education on athletic injuries, conditions, and athletes on nutritional aspects of performance
- Conducts on-field assessment of acute athletic injuries; provide immediate care as needed and assists in the management of chronic athletic injuries or conditions
- Applies appropriate modalities to treat sports injuries as well as acute first aid for all injuries and conditions
- Collects correspondence with treating physician; routinely communicates with parents or guardians, coaches, and treating therapists or physicians
- Refers athletes for more specialized care for injury management; documents all daily treatments, injuries, and referrals
- Coordinates outside care and treatments and supervises athletes' return to activity
- Assesses emergency conditions or situations and recognizes general medical conditions
- Coordinates/activates emergency medical care
- Provides instruction on rehabilitation exercises for athletic injuries and on methods of maintaining overall body conditioning while injured
- Maintains Athletic Training Room and inventory of all Athletic Training Room Supplies and resources
- Maintains a high level of professionalism at all times to positively impact the community
- Complies with all confidentiality and disclosure requirements
- Complies with all local, state, and federal rules, requirements, regulations, and laws related to Athletic Training
- Reports any suspected or known violation of a rule, requirement, or law to proper authorities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff: knowledge of child development and stages of growth; lesson planning ability; strong organizational skills; behavior management skills; supervisory skills; punctuality and dependability; excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of student instruction and management practices, procedures and techniques; knowledge of school system rules and procedures for classroom, halls, cafeteria, library and transportation; knowledge of subject areas to which assigned; ability to guide, direct, teach, and control students; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to type basic records; ability to operate audio-visual equipment Thorough knowledge of diagnose and treat athletics who have sustained injuries to their muscles and bones. Work with physicians and other medical professionals to provide preventative care, teach others how to prevent injuries, emergency response, and rehabilitative care for patients who receive injuries as athletes or while engaging in athletic activities. The athletic trainer’s duties, enumerated in this document, should not be considered all-inclusive. The athletic trainer will be present at home athletic contests and practices and shall attend other post-season and home-hosted contests as directed by the Athletic Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in Athletic Training or a related field. Must hold or be eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer in the State of Virginia. BOC Certified. Two years of athletic training experience preferred, but not required.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction differentiated for students with various learning needs (special education, English Language Learners, Gifted) is expected. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, and families is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with families by phone and in person is necessary.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated on ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
