Infrastructure Technician
Department of Technology
Full-time, Temporary Position
Benefits-Eligible
FLSA Non-exempt

Benefits include medical and dental insurance, paid leave, and more. This position is not eligible to participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS)

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
The Infrastructure Technician performs installation, maintenance and repair of structured cabling and infrastructure hardware across all school division facilities. This position also provides general support to division infrastructure projects as needed. Work is performed in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors, as well as during and after normal business hours. Infrastructure cabling and hardware includes cabling and equipment for hardwired and wireless data transmission, audio/visual equipment, computer/telecommunications equipment, and physical locating of underground ACPS data utilities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Installs, maintains and repairs inside and outside plant cabling, both copper and fiber optic;
  • Performs termination of copper cabling, data, A/V, low voltage;
  • Performs installation of racks and distribution frames;
  • Performs set-up and installation of fiber optic splice enclosures;
  • Performs termination and splicing of fiber optic cables, inside and outside plant, by mechanical cleaving and mechanical quick-connect or via core alignment arc fusion splicing machine;
  • Performs certification of data cabling by electrical or optical time domain reflectometry;
  • Installs and performs proof testing of conduits, metallic and non-metallic.
  • Keeps records of testing results, physical maps, and properly labels all installations;
  • Performs cable location, especially for underground utilities, via subsurface utility transmission beaconing and receiving equipment;
  • Coordinates and facilitates utility marking requests and responses through VA811/Miss Utility;
  • Installs data switching equipment and connections as specified by network engineering staff;
  • Installs indoor and outdoor wireless equipment, associated antennae and accessories;
  • Installs AV equipment- projectors, televisions, sound reinforcement, associated mounting hardware and accessories;
  • Installs telephones, fax machines and associated equipment;
  • Installs video surveillance equipment;
  • Performs technical troubleshooting and repair of infrastructure equipment;
  • Performs and records physical inventory of materials and equipment;
  • Tracks all work performed via work management system;
  • Transports materials and equipment via van or truck as needed;
  • Adheres to appropriate safe practices for self, personnel in schools and personnel under his/her supervision;
  • Uses various computer based software packages for productivity and system configuration;
  • Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installing and repairing structured cabling systems. Demonstrable logic abilities; knowledge of productivity software, basic networking and networking equipment; demonstrated abilities in oral and written communication skills; ability to work well with people. Should possess exceptional ability to work and perform under pressure; ability to work independently and self-motivated. Should exhibit strong leadership attitude in support of division projects; and ability to lead others in a team environment.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or vocational school. Training and certification in structured cabling is preferred. One or more years working in a similar position is preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Work may be performed in an office, server room, classroom, computer lab, conference room, roof, basement, crawlspace, ceiling, roadside, etc. Continuous ability to communicate by telephone is necessary. Regular use of power tools, computers and other peripherals is necessary. Performance of strenuous physical tasks, such as: walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending or stooping; climbing ladders; working in confined spaces; or lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds. Work includes regular handling of small fragile computer components and large components weighing more than 100 pounds. Travel to locations throughout the School Division is required. Regular contact is made with internal departments and senior persons at all levels of the School Division. Contacts are usually cooperative, however require tact and diplomacy. External contacts with vendor companies and other IT agencies. Occasional need to perform urgent tasks to meet organizational deadlines. Frequent work activity after normal duty hours, and occasional weekend duties.

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
