General Definition of Work:

Performs responsible skilled work in the repair and installation of electrical lines, fixtures and equipment; does related work as required. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Maintains acceptable attendance and general safety standards in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.


Essential Functions:
  • In cooperation with the supervisor, plans all electrical projects for the school system including design, material procurement, allocation of manpower, scheduling, and evaluation of completed work;
  • Provides on the job training for all electricians and maintenance helpers;
  • Coordinates the preventive maintenance program and trouble shoots problems for all electrical equipment, sound systems, clock systems, fire alarms, traffic lights, and ETV systems;
  • Participates in communication meetings with the supervisor and other foremen to promote teamwork, cooperation and excellence;
  • Assists the supervisor with the evaluation of new employees and the annual evaluation of all electricians, and maintenance helpers;
  • Acts as a resource person in the areas of safety and energy conservation;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs electrical power and lighting lines, cables and associated parts of circuits
  • Installs and maintains switches, outlets, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, meters, light fixtures, electric motors, public address and fire alarm systems;
  • Installs timers for lights, heaters;
  • Tests and repairs electrical equipment and appliances;
  • Provides electrical connections for machinery and installs motors, electrical welding machines and similar equipment;
  • Inspects and tests equipment, electrical control and safety devices;
  • Maintains records of work and provides written and oral reports;
  • Assumes prime responsibility for the security of materials, equipment, tools and supplies;
  • Establishes appropriate safety practices for school staff and other employees;
  • Assists in providing cost estimates for repairs, installations and preventive maintenance;
  • Participates in pager/on-call rotating schedule; Prioritizes work orders and monitors work order close outs through the use of computerized software;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installing and repairing electrical wiring systems, controls and electrical machinery and equipment in buildings; thorough knowledge of the provisions of the appropriate electrical code, and of pertinent City or State inspection and safety requirements; general knowledge of computers and their operation, including MS Office Suite Software and keyboard skills; ability to diagnose and correct electrical power, lighting or communications failures; ability to perform field or shop repairs of electrical equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions.


Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or vocational school. Extensive experience as a general electrician, to include a Journeyman’s License (electrical) and coursework in the electrical field is required.


Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:

Performance of more strenuous physical tasks, such as a) walking over rough or uneven surfaces; b) bending or stooping; c) working in confined spaces; d) lifting or carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, and e) exposure to potentially disabling injuries or illnesses. Cooperative in nature, with most conflicts resolved by higher authority; regular contacts made with individuals from a) other internal organization units; b) outside organization; and c) the general public for the purpose of achieving organization goals and missions. Communication is usually cooperative in nature, with most conflicts resolved by higher authority.
