This position performs routine work in cleaning/sanitizing an assigned area of a school building by followingprescribed cleaning frequencies. Under limited supervision, this position is also responsible for floormaintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the immediate perimeter of the school building. Shiftwork may be required.
General Definition Of Work
This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and cleaning of buildings to ensure a safe, clean, and functional learning environment. Manages a team of custodians, assigning tasks, and ensuring that work is completed efficiently and to APPA Level 2 cleanliness standards. Performs routine and maintenance cleaning, ensures compliance with safety regulations, manages inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, and conducts regular inspections to identify and address cleaning deficiencies. Effectively communicates with other departments and building occupants to address needs and concerns. This position is designated as “Essential Personnel”, which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
Essential Functions
Must be able to follow oral and written directions, work independently, and be able to work in a team setting. Must have general knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment to include the use of heavy commercial cleaning equipment such as high-powered buffers and scrubbers. Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, hazardous materials, and other work-related precautions.
Education And Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, with two years of custodial or janitorial experience and a minimum of one year supervisory or team lead experience, ACPS Custodial Certification may substitute for supervisory experience SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition in order to meet the physical requirements of the job. Negative drug screening and negative tuberculin test required. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on assignment.
Physical Conditions And Nature Of Work Contacts
Work is typically performed walking or standing. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds continuously, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds occasionally. Occasionally exposed to inclement weather and adverse driving conditions. In certain circumstances custodial team members may be required to work independently in schools. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardous substances. Custodians are in daily contact with teachers, students, administration, the public and other work-related personnel. The ability to coordinate work activity, handle complaints, express a service-oriented attitude and to get along with others is essential.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated on ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.

Essential Functions
- Opens and/or secures buildings;
- Inspects building(s) for safety and cleanliness, referring deficiencies to the appropriate personnel. Conducts monthly safety reviews and submits reports to Assistant Director for Custodial Services;
- Checks building for heating and cooling adequacy and refers deficiencies to Building Services;
- Interacts with and counsels custodians on minor conflicts, including cleanliness deficiencies; refers serious infractions to their Custodial Zone Manager or the Assistant Director for Custodial Services;
- Approves and submits time records;
- Schedules custodial coverage for weekend events;
- Coordinates work, schedules and relevant information with evening custodial staff and custodial department leadership;
- Maintains a working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook email software and manage daily email monitoring and correspondence;
- Accepts and puts away supply deliveries, checks packing slips for accuracy and reports discrepancies to the Assistant Director for Custodial Services;
- Evaluates practices, procedures, and facilities to assess safety concerns, monitor safety compliance and work to enforce a culture of safety;
- Investigates complaints and provides follow-up with appropriate personnel;
- Follows ACPS Building Services guidelines for ordering custodial supplies;
- Assists Building Manager with annual performance evaluations;
- Performs routine cleaning tasks by using prescribed chemicals and machines. The functions include trash and recycling removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, high and low dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming, and spotting carpet, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, restocking soap dispensers and paper supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, cleaning walls, vents, chalkboards, and baseboards and other assigned cleaning tasks;
- Performs the proper cleaning, care and storage of equipment and supplies;
- Responds to a variety of requests from building occupants which includes but is not limited to: setting up for meetings and class functions, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries;
- Assists in training and onboarding new custodial staff;
- Reviews, submits, and monitors work order requests for assigned site and regularly meets with administrators to review work orders;
- Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills, restroom problems, and student illnesses;
- Performs minor maintenance tasks;
- Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing/burnishing, scrubbing and recoating;
- Maintains carpet by machine extraction, spotting and bonnet cleaning;
- Maintains building perimeter by performing sweeping walks, mowing grass, weeding flower beds, trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow;
- Monitors Floating Custodians’ performance and provides feedback to Custodial Zone Manager and Assistant Director for Custodial Services;
- This position is designated as Essential Personnel, which requires that the employees report to their job site during emergencies, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergencies. May be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies, including weather and other building emergencies;
- Performs other duties as required.
