Job Summary/ Objective

Under general direction, supports Fire Rescue Logistics Facility and all functions including supply, assignment, inspection, maintenance and repairs of the following items including but not limited to equipment, uniforms, turnout gear, and other supplies.

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct support to Logistics Battalion Chief and/or Logistics Staff and the Deputy Chief of Operations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, policy, and procedure.
  • Serves as a liaison with volunteer/career members and vendors.
  • Inspects inventory items for accuracy, quantity, quality, and damage.
  • Moves materials and items from receiving or storage areas to shipping or to other designated areas.
  • Sort and place materials or items on racks, shelves, or bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, style, color, or product code.
  • Reads work orders, shipping orders, or requisitions to determine items to be moved, gathered, or distributed and/or shipped.
  • Cleans, maintains, and always organizes storage and work areas for orderliness.
  • Conducts turnout gear and uniform in person fittings.
  • Cleans, inventories, and distributes department turnout gear as needed.
  • Performs alterations and repairs on turnout gear and uniforms as necessary.
  • Initiates, receives, and fills work order request for uniforms, turnout gear, equipment, etc.
  • Operates Fire and EMS apparatus as needed.
  • Operates a forklift and other equipment (i.e., hand truck, pallet jack).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of basic inventory practices and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain inventory records;
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment.
  • Must have experience with standard warehouse equipment such as hand trucks, forklifts, box cutters, and tape dispensers.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • FEMA Incident Command System 100, 200, 700, & 800 required within one year.
  • OSHA forklift operator certification is required within one year.
  • Additional factory/manufacturer training may be required on an as needed basis.
  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses.

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications

  • Prior warehouse and/or procurement experience preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach and stretch with hands and arms with a full range of motion.
  • Work is typically performed in an open bay at a County facility (fire station/logistics facility).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles is necessary.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting at least 100 lbs occasionally and 75 lbs frequently.
  • Certain work conditions may require the use of safety glasses and leather steel toe shoes meeting OSHA guidelines.
  • Frequent contact with volunteer and career fire rescue personnel and outside vendors.
  • Regular work in outside weather conditions.
  • Occasional work near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces.
  • Occasionally exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration.
  • Often exposure to extremely high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
  • The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during operation of certain apparatus and equipment when noise levels may be loud.
  • The position is considered an essential position.
  • Regular interaction with various outside vendors.
  • Must successfully pass drug screening and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical prior to employment.

Remote Work:

This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $23.13 - $25.56 (approx. $48,105 - $53,169 per year). Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum, experience and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA Non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy,

  • P-60.
