Positions Responsibilities:
The Public Health Nurse in this position will work in all ARHS programs, including Behavioral Health, Primary Care, Adult Health, Women's Health, Maternal Health, Child Health and STDs. This position may also provide direction to other staff as directly related to these services. The Public Health Nurse in this position will also assist in establishing clinic goals, policies, procedures, and guidelines for these programs. Makes plans and adapts to meet client and agency goals. Daily and weekly work is self-planned and coordinated with a team. This position will work primarily in Currituck but may work in other sites across the district as assigned.
Key Duties:
- Work to establish clinic goals and objectives, provide input on policies and procedures working within the guidelines established by the Division of Public Health and serve on the Quality Assurance Review Committee.
- Helps to manage the clinic assigned, establish client schedules, perform assessments, coordinate required clinical services, and provide reports in writing to other staff serving in the clinic.
- Interview patients, review medical history, diet recall, lab reports and develop individualized patient care plans.
- Plan and implement education programs for the clinics assigned including Primary Care and the Behavioral Health Program.
- Serve as resource for Primary Care Clinic to other staff members.
- Assist with the Behavioral Health/Tele Psych Programs with supervisor direction.
- Recruit clients for the Behavioral Health Program / Primary and other clinics as assigned.
- Provide clinic services such as but not limited to immunizations, obtain height, weight, blood pressure, physical examination and lab work for the traditional clinics such as, Child Health, Maternity, Family Planning and Adult Health.
- Enhanced role duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs.
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed.
- General knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
- Ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions.
- Adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.
NOTE: All degrees shall be from an appropriately accredited institution. Official transcripts will be required upon hire.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing.
Administering the Class: Have a nursing degree from a baccalaureate school accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; or (b) Complete within one year of employment with the health department an introductory course in principles and practices of public health and public health nursing sponsored by the Department. The curriculum for the course shall be developed by the Department with input from local health departments and schools of nursing.
