A Police Lieutenant performs difficult professional protective service and responsible administrative work commanding a division, an activity, or special function in the Police Department, and does related work as required. - Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the operation of a division or activity in the Police Department including criminal investigation, patrol, inspections, training, planning and support services.
- Prepares and distributes general orders, administrative orders and standard operating procedures.
- Confers with officers commanding units under supervision on routine and special matters.
- Coordinates work of subordinates with other law enforcement agencies.
- Assists in planning departmental programs and operating procedures, recommends improvements to policies and procedures.
- Conducts scheduled and unscheduled inspections of division.
- Evaluates the work of subordinates, counsels, and disciplines employees.
- Supervises and conducts felony investigations.
- Supervises the preparation of necessary records and reports relating to activities.
- Monitors, schedules and coordinates training programs for veteran officers and new officers.
- Reviews and files reports prepared and submitted by subordinates and prepare detailed reports personally.
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, boards, and agencies as assigned.
- Assists in policy and procedures formulation and implementation; handles special investigations.
- Serves as Communications/Records Officer when necessary.
- Conducts Community or crime prevention programs.
- Serves as liaison between Community organizations and the Department.
- Serves as commander or coordinator of special assignments or functions as assigned or appointed by the Chief of Police.
- Performs related tasks as required, and additional tasks listed in essential job functions.
- Graduation from high school, considerable
- Graduation from an accredited 2-year college with major course work in criminal justice, law enforcement or related field and extensive experience in police work at the level of Sergeant.
- Applicants to be Sergeants in good standing with a minimum of 7 years’ service in this department with a minimum of 2 years as a Sergeant.
OR
- Certification of 1600 training hours as approved and documented by this department for in-service training or other specialized training which enhances the duties of a Police Officer.

Special Requirement:
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of the Intermediate Law Enforcement certificate. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position as established by the department.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling, and performing repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium to heavy work exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 20-50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate a police vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things on patrol, use a computer and complete records.
Salary : $69,408 - $88,496
