Performs a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks in the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and public buildings and grounds.
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks related to the maintenance of streets, storm drains, driveways, and public buildings and grounds. Work may include performing various horticultural and grounds maintenance practices, performing building maintenance tasks, and operating some light equipment. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases and mists. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision by a team leader and is inspected in progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions and established standards.
- Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as cutting lawns, painting, using power hand equipment; repairing driveways, replacing storm drain pipe, repairing curb and gutter.
- Pours and finishes concrete work for sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveway cuts.
- Construct storm water catch basins, including brickwork.
- Rakes leaves, cuts shrubbery, weed-eater, picking up limbs and removing snow.
- Operates all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as tractors, leaf vacuum, bobcat, asphalt burner, chipper, small dump truck, hand tools, and mowing machines.
- Trims tree limbs on City right of way using bucket truck.
- Assists in paving streets and potholes.
- Cleans storm drains.
- Performs equipment repair and maintenance duties.

Required:
- Graduation from high school and some experience in streets and or sidewalks; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and motor vehicles, perform trades tasks, inspect the work of others, and review work for accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness.
