JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Director of Special Education
QUALIFICATIONS - The successful candidate must possess:
New York State School District Administrator Certification or School District Leader Certification, required.
Minimum of a Master's degree, with a major in education administration or related degree.
New York State teacher certification in Special Education, School Counselor, School Social Worker or School Psychologist, preferred.
Successful experience, of at least five years, as a teacher and/or administrator.
The background and experience facilitating diverse teams and integrated implementation initiatives.
The ability to evaluate personnel, programs, and systems to identify priorities and develop/implement improvement plans for student and professional learning.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee and supervise Pupil Personnel Services (Related Services, Special Education and Counseling) in developing, coordinating, planning, and monitoring of counseling, special education programs, the Committee on Special Education (CSE), the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), 504, and Response to Intervention processes.
Facilitate Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Education (CPSE) meetings
Advocate for students to access and participate in the least restrictive educational environment
Coordinate professional learning opportunities and development for faculty to write and implement Individualized Education Programs
Collaborate with District administrators to plan and build future programming for students with disabilities (SWD)
Communicate with outside services and school districts in regards to student needs and placement
Ensure adherence to timelines set by state regulations for CSE and CPSE
Collaborate with administrators and contributes to District efforts to improve, integrate, and ensure more readily available information relating to student learning, professional learning, and organizational performance
Regularly reviews NYSED communications, BOE Policy, Administrative Regulations and other documents to ensure compliance and recommend changes throughout the organization
Ensures compliance of professional learning in accordance with State and Federal Laws, NYSED Regulations, and BOE Policy
Supervises, observes and evaluates faculty/staff (K-12) through the Annual Professional Performance Review process
Monitors, synthesizes, and disseminates educational research in order to sustain and support professional learning
Builds, monitors, and oversees curriculum, assessment, and instruction annual budgets to support long-range District fiscal responsibility, including preparing and providing oversight and implementation of Federal, State, and local grants
Serves as instructional liaison to BOCES in areas related to instruction, special education, and technology
Collaborates with the administrator of the Foster Care and McKinney-Vento (Homeless) program and jointly serve in the role as assigned
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
Job Qualifications
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-Months; Salary to be established by the Board of Education; Follows the Administrators’ Contract (salary range: $85,000 to $95,000, based on experience/qualifications).
EVALUATION: Performance evaluation, completed annually by the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.
