Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for the assigned campus. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate
- ESL Certification preferred or ESL Certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
- Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
- Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
- Able to manage budget and personnel
- Able to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Able to interpret data
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year teaching and band directing experience, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
- Engage and plan with high school director(s) to align program curricular and extracurricular activities with the high school band program.
- Plan and teach a program of study in accordance with the Alief Instructional Model, the philosophy and the curriculum of the school district.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all instruction in order to achieve curriculum goals.
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
- Continue to assess the accomplishments of students, keep appropriate records, give immediate feedback and provide progress reports on a regular basis.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Counsel with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis.
- Establish reasonable rules for classroom behavior and maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
- Maintain professional competence through professional learning provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working hours.
- Participate in curriculum development programs and selection of textbooks as required.
- Assist with developing and implementing plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist with providing for band participation at community and extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
- Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Accompany band students to district, TMEA, and other functions outside of the campus environment.
Student Growth and Development
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Be a positive role model for students and support mission of the school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Accompany and supervise students on trip activities and arrange transportation and meals.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
- Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Budget and Inventory
- Assist in developing and administering budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Assist in coordinating fundraising activities and manage funds.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.
- Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all instruments and equipment.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of teachers, Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), and the extracurricular assignment evaluation.

2025-2026 Salary Schedule
Minimum teacher salary is $64,100
2025-2026 Teacher Salary Schedule
Salary is based on 187 days. If working less than 187 days, the salary will be less.
Certified teacher sign-on bonus:
Certified Teacher - Any field - $4,000
Special Education Teacher (Self-Contained Assignment) - $5,000
Bilingual Certified Teacher - $5,000
Certified Teacher with existing TIA Designation - $8,000
Bonus payment delivered in two (2) installments-50% (9/30/25), 50% (9/30/26)
