Summary

The Albuquerque Academy Science Department is seeking an individual for the position of Laboratory Technician for a temporary period starting immediately and ending on May 21, 2025. This position is not benefits eligible. The Laboratory Technician assists faculty with the implementation of scientific experiments and manages student laboratory interns. The Laboratory Technician orders supplies, maintains laboratory equipment, prepares solutions, enforces safety regulations, and cares for live biological specimens in the drosophila lab. Essential Functions

  • Assist faculty with prepping labs and equipment according to lab procedures.
  • Assist faculty with laboratory instruction and implementation of labs as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Assist with in-service training to science faculty on laboratory safety standards.
  • Assist in the design and development of new demos and lab materials as needed.
  • Mix solutions and dilute chemicals needed for lab procedures.
  • Remove and clean all glassware and other supplies upon completion of a lab.
  • Organize and maintain the storage room, stock room, and prep rooms.
  • Label all chemicals, solutions, fly vials, and fly food.
  • Store all chemical substances, solutions, and compressed gases according to safety guidelines.
  • Repair and maintain equipment.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering all lab supplies, equipment, and fly food.
  • Manage biological and chemical waste control.
  • Drive to the grocery store, hardware store, and other suppliers to buy supplies as needed.
  • Shop and maintain supplies for kitchen laboratory.
  • Manage electronic calendars for departmental iPads and kitchen space.
  • Monitor and ensure student safety during lab procedures.
  • Maintain live animals and biological specimens.
  • Assist with routine microscope maintenance.
  • Manage the shipping and receiving of live specimens and other packages for the science department.
  • Assist with routine fly sorting and feeding procedures.
  • Assist with monitoring fly lab when students are present.
  • Maintain fish tanks and other science facilities as assigned.
  • Order and maintain office supplies in the science conference room.
  • Coordinate maintenance of printers and copiers.
  • Update lobby directory, mailbox labels, office supply labels yearly.
  • Call for coffee supplies when needed.
  • Order building tissues when needed.
  • Ensure appropriate labeling of building spaces.
  • Supervise student lab interns.
  • Support the School and its mission, always maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
  • Foster and maintain a culture of mutual respect, equitable practice, and joy. 
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and communicate and collaborate effectively across differences.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend employee meetings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Job Qualifications

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a field related to Science.

Experience

  • Training in the handling of hazardous materials is required.
  • Previous experience in a related field is preferred. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects with frequent interruptions.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms.
  • Working knowledge of stoichiometry is preferred.
  • Experience working with drosophila is preferred.
  • Knowledge of simple mechanics (gears, pulleys, and small motors) is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with power tools is preferred.

Special Requirements

  • A valid Driver’s License is required. 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Working Environment

  • Majority of work is performed in an indoor lab setting in the campus Science Building.
  • Work hours are generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • This is a temporary position beginning immediately and ending on May 21, 2025.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds with or without assistance
