Under minimal direction, manages minimal to high severity claims, arising from one or more lines of insurance andexposure from inception to closure

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation :

  • Analyzes and recommends new or modified risk management plans, policies, procedures and processes
  • Audits weekly claims payments reconciliation and payments to vendors.
  • Works with claims adjusters to prepare monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc claims reports.
  • Reviews claims files and makes recommendations to bring claims to closure in an effective and timely manner.
  • Monitors current claims settlement authority structure to reflect the district's goals for cost containment of claims and litigation costs.
  • Maintains relationships with defense counsel for the handling of litigated claims.
  • Monitors litigation to include compliance with litigation plans, strategies and insurer requirements.
  • Incorporates fiscal constraints into litigation plans that insure that the district's cost containment goals are implemented.
  • Reviews bills from service providers for compliance with best practices, claims standards and contractual agreements.
  • Encourages the utilization of alternative dispute resolution strategies such as; mediations, informal discussions, binding and non-binding arbitration.
  • Implements and coordinates effective cost containment strategies and practices to prevent fraud.
  • Seeks to recover expenses through diligent pursuit of subrogation and restitution.
  • Communicates effectively with excess insurance carriers.
  • Monitors claims to ensure competitive pricing for auto rentals, alternative lodging, general contracting bidding, auto appraising, salvage bidding etc.
  • Assists all levels of management in the administration and application of claims reporting practices and procedures.
  • Monitors claims files for quality assurance and promotes correct data input into the claims information system to help in overall claims management by identifying problems, patterns and trends.
  • Analyzes claims data and makes recommendations for controlling loss exposures.
  • Assists the Loss Control Manager and utilizes training materials (i.e., audiovisual, audio and other media methods) to communicate claims information to administrators.

DUTIES : In addition to the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must perform the following duties :

  • Complies with state-approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations.
  • Articulates and facilitates the implementation of the mission and values of the Albuquerque Public Schools.
  • Safeguards confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records and reports as required by law, state directives, District policy and administrative regulations.
  • Shares the responsibility for the supervision and care of District inventory, proper and safe use of facilities, equipment and supplies, and reports safety hazards promptly.
  • Maintains professional relationships and works cooperatively with employees, the community and other professionals.
  • Maintains professional competence through individual and staff training, in-service educational activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Attends and / or conducts staff meetings and participates on committees within area of responsibility.
  • Performs other tasks related to area of responsibilities as requested or assigned by an immediate supervisor.

  • Ability to provide advice and technical assistance in the preparation of budgets, and find the most efficient distribution of funds and other resources among various department and programs.
  • Experience in serving as a committee / task force chair or team leader.
  • REQUIREMENTS :

    MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS :

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance or a related field. Eight years adjusting work experience will substitute for a degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience working in insurance, claims or litigation management.
  • Ability to learn a basic knowledge of Excel skills including financial, statistical, and lookup / reference functions.
  • An ability to understand database queries and reports.
  • Advanced business math skills, accurate data entry skills.
  • Ability to make presentations and simplify technical financial materials and finding for lay audiences.
  • Knowledge of claims adjudication principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of insurance and claims practices and relevant cost containment strategies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and support effective partnerships with operating officials and other employees.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information, develop and implement strategies for decision making.
