What are the responsibilities and job description for the Optometric Technician position at Albuquerque Vision Care & Advanced Eyewear?
Optometric assistants perform routine tasks in Optometrists' offices. Their work enables the Optometrist to devote their time to patient care. Assistants obtain medical history and perform patient testing. Assistants explain testing equipment, procedures and/or use of medications to patients, and teach patients how to properly use and care for contact lenses.
Optometric assistants, also known as paraoptometric assistants or “techs”, sell eye care products, and interact with optometrists and opticians. Customer service, attention to detail, and precise documentation skills are integral traits for this profession. Their work must be performed correctly and efficiently. Time management skills are also a must due to keeping patients and doctors on schedule. Computer familiarity and typing abilities are beneficial as we utilize electronic medical records. Basic skills in math, particularly algebra working with positive and negative numbers, organization, and astute problem solving abilities would be involved in everyday work duties. A scribe must be initially trained for the duties of a tech, but additionally work side by side with the doctor to “shadow” in an exam and transcribe the interaction to diagnosis and medical codes in the electronic medical record. Keen observation skills are a must.
