We foster an inclusive culture and are looking for diverse, talented people to join Alcon and we are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer at our R&D location in Lake Forest, CA. Electrical Engineering researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
In this role, a typical day will include:
- Research and develop product EMC & Wireless requirements including selection of applicable standards & tests, with analyses to support Alcon’s global market access strategies for all electro-mechanical surgical instruments.
- Provide strategic planning to enable R&D to meet product EMC & Wireless certification requirements within their designs.
- Perform EMC and Wireless test assessments throughout the development lifecycle including early stages to provide the necessary inputs to R&D to drive product development.
- Ensure capabilities are maintained to ensure coverage of all applicable EMC and Wireless standards to support and direct product development with verification using broadly acceptable test procedures.
- Rapidly harmonize capabilities to new standards and regulations for EMC & Wireless requirements critical to Alcon business and provide punctual input to project development teams.
- Support product development utilizing specialized EMI/EMC hardware and software within all stages of product development at the circuitry level (PCB level) as well as system.
- Support development including planning, communicate periodic status and known risks (with proposed solutions) on the projects to R&D core teams.
- Serve as project team SME in design/test/analyses/simulation techniques needed to support project objectives.
- Capable of performing EMI/EMC testing and troubleshooting of Alcon products in the Alcon EMC Lab and external labs.
- Plan and organize product testing at external labs to perform qualification tests and certification. Responsible for collaborating and contracting with RF device vendors to ensure global compliance.
- Utilize EMC/EMI simulation/verification software (EMI Stream, EMScan) needed to verify PCB layout on the earlier stages of product development process.
- Lead internal/external labs, technicians, and design engineers to accomplish timely/valuable results at optimal cost.
- Lead teams to ensure full execution of identified required testing and review activities needed to ensure product compliance including de-risking product launches through pre-verification test rehearsals.
- Document and execute all V&V tests compliant to medical device QSR, ISO 13485.
- Prepare clearly written, accurate, highly detailed Safety, EMC and Wireless verification test plans and test reports.
- Provide timely DHF deliverables fully compliant to all applicable standards and regulations.

- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school 13 yrs; Assoc. 9 yrs; M.S. 2 yrs; PhD 0 yrs)
- The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
- 5 Years of Relevant Experience
