POSITION SUMMARY
The Underwriter position is responsible for underwriting Conventional, FHA, USDA and VA loans following established Company, agency and investor guidelines. The Underwriter evaluates mortgage loan files and assesses risk based on compliance, agency, investor, and company guidelines to ensure salability with minimal loss. Individuals in this role are required to keep current with regulatory and market changes. The Underwriter will be service-focused with superior time-management and communication skills, have the ability to multi-task, and possess keen attention to detail. The Mortgage Underwriter must conduct business with integrity and in a highly ethical manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Underwrite Conventional, FHA, USDA, and VA loans following established Company, agency, and investor guidelines.
- Review all loan applications and supporting documents in order to ensure all necessary information is included
- Request additional information as needed on all documents to help determine loan risk
- Analyze all documents in detail so eligibility decisions are accurate
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of industry standards and company policies so compliance standards are met
- Communicate and document reasons for approval or rejection of loans so clients and loan officers are well informed
- Research applicant’s employment and financial history to help determine accuracy of application and documents
- Assist in training other staff members to ensure company standards are being met
- Complete thorough analysis of mortgage loan files to determine compliance with agency, Company and investor guidelines to ensure salability of closed loans
- Review resubmitted files and documents
- Make and issue independent compliant loan decisions
- Maintain Company service level and turn-time standards
- Respond to audits and post-closing issues in a timely manner
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE, AND COMPETENCIES
- 3 years’ experience underwriting Conventional, USDA, FHA and VA loans required.
- DE (Direct Endorsement) designation required
- VA SAR/LAPP (Staff Appraiser Reviewer / Lender Appraiser Processing Program) designations preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or a related field required
- Strong analytical decision-making and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent mortgage loan processing system computer skills
- Encompass experience preferred

- Well-versed with keyboard shortcuts and able to identity new ways to complete a task in less time
- Compliance with all Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws, and Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) requirements is required. Employee must complete annual training in these areas
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a clerical office setting based out of your home. Climate-controlled surroundings with adequate lighting and little to moderate noise when in the office is required. Additionally, adequate space is required to routinely use standard office equipment such as: computer, phone, photocopier/printer, fax machine, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some administrative use of standard office equipment is required. This would require the ability to lift files, type, and bend or stand as necessary.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
